Coding the Humanities Event: How to Train Your Programmer

Τhis Thursday, June the 19th, the Coding the Humanities team invites you to another evening event. From 17:00 to 19:00, Ashley Williams, a member of the Open Web technology company Bocoup, will give a talk on her experiences with teaching programming to humanities researchers, and how coding and the humanities enrich each other. Ashley Williams is a “former NYC Teaching Fellow, former lead instructor of the Flatiron School’s NYC Web Development Fellowship, and current instructor atWesleyan University. She pairs a wealth of education background with a passion and prowess for web development” (Bocoup.com). In addition to this, she will present ideas about Bocoup’s projects for the open web and collaborations between academia and private partners. The event will take place in a relaxed ambience, with refreshing drinks and food!

"How to Train Your Programmer"

The world of programming education is currently exploding. This talk will both survey the current approaches as well as take a deep dive into the approach-agnostic theoretical and pedagogical challenge of teaching programming and computer science, mainly: abstraction. Examples from multiple disciplines will identify the problem of teaching abstraction as a ubiquitous demand across nearly every domain, and align the issues of creativity and critical thinking in the humanities with issues in computer science. The talk will conclude with a discussion of how the discipline of computer science and that of the humanities can inform each other to produce more effective and creative solutions to both teaching abstractions and developing abstractions.
