Sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård, in a remarkable performance), a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When she declines, Gustav casts an up-and-coming young Hollywood star (Elle Fanning) instead, forcing the family to confront long-buried tensions as the striving outsider becomes entangled in their fraught dynamic.
With Sentimental Value, Danish-Norwegian auteur Joachim Trier follows his critically acclaimed The Worst Person in the World (2021) with a magnetic comedy-drama about legacy, art, and the performances that bind—and divide—families. Trier’s insightful and captivating adult drama, which won the Grand Prix at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, furthers the writer-director’s piercing exploration of the frayed ties that bind us to one another and to our creative selves.
