In our last meetup, we got into a heady discussion about lyrics. It turns out there’s quite a few ways to approach the subject, which is only one component of the songwriting bag.

This Meetup is to expand on that discussion and invite anyone who has written a song and attempted to bring it to the world’s attention. We’ll focus on the psychology of songs, how they achieve that je ne sai quoi.

We’ll also delve into the creative process, and how it can often involve set backs. How do you maintain your creative effort when you feel uninspired or at a loss for what to do next? What keeps you motivated? Do you have your own gold standard that determines what makes a song work for you?

We’ll discuss bringing dynamics into your songs. What are the components of a song that you might be missing? What can you add (or take away) to make your song better?

We’ll explore the process of putting a song together, making it personal.

We’ll talk about favorite songs, and genres, and what makes a song great. Not just, oh I like this because it’s what I grew up with. But why do you like it?

There will probably be ample opportunity to share, as usual, if someone has a song they’d like to deconstruct.
