Sterling Forest Hike, Tuxedo Park, NY
Details
Description: 5.5 miles in moderately hilly terrain;
About about 3 hours of hiking for about 4 hrs total.
The trails in this section of Sterling Forest are favored by the bicyclists because the treadway, the part of the trail where you put your feet,
is rather smooth and less rocky than other trails.
There is an extended uphill stretch until we get to the upper ridge but it’s gradual and not too steep.
Total ascent is about 900 feet. My test hike ladies, Lucy and Lilli, say it’s moderate and they like it.
When: Jan 11, 2025. Get there by 9:40 AM for a hike start at 10AM.
Fire Damage: Due to damage from the Jennings Creek Fire, much of Sterling Forest west of Sterling Lake is closed.
So, we will be hiking east of Long Meadow Road near Laurel Meadow Ponds hiking to the Hutchinson Trail.
Features: Visitor Center with a scale model of the park,
McKeag's Meadow, Laurel Meadow Ponds,
the Red Back and Hutchinson Trails and the Augusta Mine.
Facilities: Restrooms, and sinks with running water. We will use the visitor center at the start of the hike. We will call for a separation break during the hike.
Requirements: Hiking Boots and non-cotton hiking socks, and a backpack with water and lunch.
