What we're about

Come and dance with the 5Rhythms community. 5Rhythms is a structured movement meditation practice. There are no steps to learn. Gabrielle Roth's 5Rhythms wave takes us through the five rhythms of Flowing to Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and then to Stillness.

So this is a group for all those who love or are interested in dancing 5Rhythms. It is a chance to move, dance and connect with others. It is not about dancing to look cool, rather it is your dance, your interpretation.

In a typical session we start with slow gentle music to arrive, stretch and begin to move. The music will then progress through one or more "waves" generally from slow to fast music back to slow forming the basis of the wave. The wave starts with the first rhythm "flowing" and then as we get a stronger beat through "staccato", then getting faster until we go into "chaos", then out into the lighter "lyrical" and then slowing down into "stillness". However don't be concerned if you are dancing the "correct" rhythm as the music played will be your guide, just dance how the music moves you. The possible benefits will be individual to you, but many find dancing the wave allows them a chance to let go, away from the demands of day to day life. Certainly moving in this way can be healthy for the body and your mind too. We try to meet weekly on a Friday evening (but do check meetup dates) at the Refectory in the village of Easebourne near Midhurst. This is a wonderful listed building with a wooden floor.

The group is open to anyone (over the age of 18) and any ability. Just bring yourself and desire to move! The group has been running for a couple of years now and on average we get over 10 people dancing per session, sometime up to 20 people.

We generally dance barefoot, wear comfortable clothing, and bring plenty of water.

Prices - £12 or £10 concession/student/low wage

5Rhythms Class with Nikki Ashley

The Refectory

Come warm-up at 7:20. Class starts at 7:30. Note that Meetup usually shows 4-6 people signed up. We consistently get over 10 dancers (not everyone finds us via Meetup). This is your invitation to dance the Five Rhythms® moving meditation through the landscape of our being. Creative and fun - no steps to learn. Instead we listen to our own body through movement and expand our physical vocabulary in relationship to both ourselves and others in the group. The Rhythms - flow, staccato, chaos, lyrical & stillness form a map to help us let go into the process and move our energy down from the mental chatter of the head and thus feel and move with spontaneous expression. Come and dance to a 5Rhythms wave. If you have never danced 5R before, just come and see how the music moves you. This is a teacher lead class and our teacher will be London Based Nikki Ashely. We generally dance barefoot, and bring plenty of water. Prices - £12 or £10 concession/student/low wage Please DO NOT rely just on the post code to find the Refectory! 5Rhythms Sweat

The Refectory

Come warm-up at 7:20. Class starts at 7:30. Note that Meetup usually shows 4-6 people signed up. We consistently get over 12 dancers (not everyone finds us via Meetup) - sometimes 18-20. Prices - £12 or £10 concession/student/low wage Come and dance to a 5Rhythms wave. In this session we just play the music in two "waves". There is no direction or "teaching" you just dance your dance, with your fellow dancers on the dance floor. If you have never danced 5R before, just come and see how the music moves you. Half way through the session we will come together and discuss the ideas behind the 5Rhythms wave, at the end let us know if you have any questions or even if you have found answers! This is a sweat held by one of the licensed spaceholders Catherine or James, who is mentored by Gay Murphy (www.joyfuldance.co.uk) and Nikki Ashley( http://www.5rhythms.com/teachers/Nikki+Ashley ). This class is offered as part of the 5Rhythms Sweat Spaceholder mentorship program. Created by Gabrielle Roth and practiced by tens of thousands worldwide, 5Rhythms is a philosophy, perspective, performance art and a dynamic movement practice rooted in the principle that if you put the psyche in motion it will heal itself. Movement is both the medicine and the metaphor, reaching across all languages, cultures and age groups to transform the suffering into art, art into awareness, and awareness into action. Wherever the 5Rhythms are practiced, a community is born to dance, to sweat, to change, to support , and to provide a safe space for each of us to shatter the ego's hold and awaken the juicy, unpredictable, fascinating, edge-walking, rock star part of ourselves that yearns to be free. Creativity. Connection. Community. We generally dance barefoot, and bring plenty of water. Please DO NOT rely just on the post code to find the Refectory!
