Welcome to Greater Toronto History Walks!

The story of Richmond Hill has not just one main plot, but many. It was the haunt of both English and German speakers, and with that a rich and varied history that dates back to the Toronto purchase of 1787 even before the birth of Upper Canada and York, and was an active settlement during the war of 1812 as well!

In the 1820s, eight years after the War of 1812 came to its final end, Miles' Hill was renamed Richmond Hill but the name change is a bit controversial as the real reason for that change is not well known today, it may have been to honour the Duke of Richmond or for another reason that has not come to light, but Richmond Hill has a far different history from its closet neighbour Thornhill which was founded in 1794!

Technically sister districts, Richmond Hill has a longer history and in terms of dramatic events does tend to outshine the other areas around it. In terms of walking history the downtown core of Richmond Hill feels a bit like rural Ontario from the late 19th century. A fascinating walk awaits!

The price of this tour is $15.00 per person which includes tip!

This extensive walking tour begins at the southeast corner of Crosby Avenue and Yonge Street in Richmond Hill on the northern edge of the historic core!
