WHO

KURT KOLB
Kurt is an electro-mechanical engineer, turned inventor, turned patent attorney. He qualified in Europe where he took a startup portfolio to a hundred million dollar value and now specializes in helping BC startup companies to protect their first ideas and ultimately compete with global incumbents.

Kurt will explain how startups can protect that first, defining idea whilst they grow their company to the point where they will need patents to compete globally - all while maintaining a startup budget.

AMY FONG
Amy Fong is counsel with the National Intellectual Property and Technology Law groups of McCarthy Tétrault. Her engineering physics degree and her prior software and engineering work experience enable her to work closely with technology start-ups to identify aspects of their innovations which are suitable for intellectual property protection and monetization. As a registered patent and trademark agent, Amy has helped to obtain patent and trademark protection for clients in a wide range of industries, including artificial intelligence, clean technology, 3D printing, software, electronics, imaging, telecommunications, medical, and consumer product industries.
Amy received a B.A.Sc. in Engineering Physics (Computer Science Option) from the University of British Columbia in 2002 and an LL.B. from the University of Victoria in 2005. She was called to the British Columbia bar in 2007.

JADE BUCHANAN
Jade Buchanan is an associate with the National Technology Law group of McCarthy Tétrault with a practice focused on information technology, intellectual property, anti-spam compliance and privacy. His recent experience includes licensing and services agreements in big data and blockchain-driven applications, such as fraud prevention and identification management and helping clients negotiate complex privacy issues for consumer applications of Internet of Things devices. Jade has worked for clients ranging from bootstrapped tech start-ups to tech giants and Fortune 500 companies.
Jade obtained his J.D. with a focus on technology law from Dalhousie University in 2011. He was called to the Saskatchewan bar in 2012 and the British Columbia bar in 2017.

Amy and Jade will provide an overview of IP and licensing. When does it apply, how to distinguish between different IP rights and how your business can benefit through the acquisition and commercialization of IP.
