The Dances of Universal Peace are a spiritual practice of Sufi origin that combines singing and dancing of sacred phrases of the world’s religions. The intention of the dances is to raise consciousness and promote peace between diverse religions. Chants are often sacred phrases put to traditional, contemporary, or inspired melodies. A wide range of languages are used in the chants, including Arabic, Aramaic, English, Hawaiian, Hebrew, Persian, and Sanskrit.
The chants are sung in coordination with simple dancing and a variety of movement. The dancers stand in a circle around a leader and musicians who play in the center. The Dances of Universal Peace emphasis is on participation regardless of ability–dancers of all levels are Welcome to come and join. Each dance and chant is taught, explained, and led, so no prior experience is necessary. Some are deep and meditative while others are lively & fun. All are uplifting!
