Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean

Come spend the evening with Dean as he goes over his career as a musician, graphic designer, artist and photographer.

Dean Torrence was the co-founder, co-lead singer, and co-writer of the hit surf duo, JAN & DEAN. Dean first teamed up with Jan Berry in the 1950's while they both attended High School in West Los Angeles. The duo went on to score a huge string of hit songs beginning in 1959 until Jan's horrible car crash in 1966.

Dean is the "Dean of Art". Dean studied marketing at USC while he toured the country on weekends promoting #1 hits like "Surf City" and "Little Old Lady From Pasadena". Besides his studio work, Torrence became a graphic artist starting his own company, Kittyhawk Graphics, and designing and creating album covers and logos for other musicians and recording artists, including Harry Nilsson, Steve Martin, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Dennis Wilson, Bruce Johnston, The Beach Boys, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Linda Ronstadt, Canned Heat, The Ventures, and many others. Dean is a Grammy award winning graphic artist, having won a Grammy for design of the "Nitty Gritty Dirt Band" album cover and "Album Cover of the Year", for the group Pollution in 1973.
