In this lecture, you will learn what Pandas DataFrames are, who uses them, when they are used, and, most importantly, how they are used. We will cover the concepts and intuition behind the DataFrame. That will conclude the lecture portion of the workshop.

We'll then launch into a guided code-together where you will get hands-on exposure to Pandas. We will cover the essentials for creating your (possibly) first DataFrame and populating it with data. We will then advance to reading in data from some of the most common data source formats you might encounter in the wild. Next, we will cover "data wrangling" and transforming the data inside DataFrames.

Target Audience:

All levels welcome!
Bonus if you have completed our Intro to Python and Intro to SQL and RDBMS workshops.

What You Will Learn:

What Pandas is
How and when to use it
The difference between DataFrames and Databases
The difference between DataFrames and the Pandas Series
How to populate a DataFrame
Renaming Columns
Manipulating DataFrames
Generating descriptive statistics
Visualizing your DataFrame
Intro to optimizing performance
Saving all your hard work

About Your Instructor:

Connor Slagle

I am a data scientist with a fondness for biotechnology, with degrees in both chemical and environmental engineering. Recent advances in data science are revolutionizing all aspects of contemporary business, from product refinement to customer identification; In no field is this as evident (or as exciting) as in biotechnology.

I’m focused on leveraging these skills to improve targeted, non-invasive drug delivery in oncology. Additionally, I love spreading my understanding of machine learning concepts through evangelism at Galvanize.
