The Hike: We take the Lower Loop and Wendy trails which makes a circuit around the relatively flat but very scenic areas of the park. There's an initial steep climb of 100' or so but after that it's easy. The terrain is varied, with some of the trail bordering chaparral, some in oak forest and the rest in open meadow. There are great views and fresh sea breezes. The trails are mostly packed clay and dirt and some is paved road and are often wide and lend themselves to walking side-by-side for easy conversation.
Preparation: During Daylight Savings Time, the hike is all in daylight. Please note the weather and dress accordingly. In fall and winter, the hike starts just before sunset and ends in the twilight or dark so be prepared for cold and some hiking in the dark. Bring flashlights, preferably with red lights to help preserve our night vision.
Directions: Find Wendy Drive in Newbury Park (the western part of Thousand Oaks). Take Wendy Drive south until it ends in a T at Potraro Rd. There is a large dirt parking area right there. We will be waiting at the trail entrance. Alternate Directions: While the 101-Wendy Interchange is being rebuilt, you can also exit at either Borchard or Lynn and take either west to Wendy, and then south (left) on Wendy.
Late Arrivals: We'll wait for you up to five minutes past the posted start time if you're signed up and we expect you. Because we wait for you, please be responsible to us and let us know ASAP if you must cancel.
Dog Policy: Though we love dogs dearly, please don't bring dogs on these hikes as the park enforces dog registration and dogs limit our flexibility too. Sorry!
