Sunset Hike - Rancho Sierra Vista, Newbury Park -1.5 Hr- Top of Wendy Dr.

Details

Join us for a 1.5-hour, 3-mile hike around the beautiful Rancho Sierra Vista park in Newbury Park for some quick exercise, fun company and a glorious sunset. This event is more about socializing and enjoying the evening sky than it is about serious hiking. It's for both beginners and advanced hikers who can slow down and savor the experience. This event repeats weekly specifically for the purpose of hopefully seeing the same people regularly enough to become friends.

The Hike: We take the Lower Loop and Wendy trails, a very modest hike that makes a circuit around the relatively flat but very scenic areas of the park. There's an initial steep climb of 100' or so but after that it's easy. The terrain is varied, with some of the trail bordering chaparral, some in oak forest and the rest in open meadow. There are great views and fresh sea breezes. The trails are mostly packed clay and dirt and some is paved road and are often wide and lend themselves to walking side-by-side for easy conversation.

Preparation: Most of the year, the hike is all in daylight. Please note the weather and dress accordingly. In winter, the hike starts just before sunset and ends in the twilight so be prepared for cold and some hiking in the dark. Bring flashlights, preferably with red lights to help preserve our night vision.

Schedule: This is a standing, weekly event, every Tuesday at 6pm, except in winter, when start times are about a half hour before sunset and adjust with the sun. Cancels for only the worst weather.

Directions: Find Wendy Drive in Newbury Park (the western part of Thousand Oaks). Take Wendy Drive south until it ends in a T at Potraro Rd. There is a large dirt parking area right there. We will be waiting at the trail entrance. Alternate Directions: While the 101-Wendy Interchange is being rebuilt, you can also exit at either Borchard or Lynn and take either west to Wendy, and then south (left) on Wendy.

Dog Policy: Though we love dogs dearly, please don't bring dogs on these hikes. We would rather these hikes be more about socializing and having dogs along seems to take our focus off the people and dogs limit our flexibility too. Sorry!

Late Arrivals: We'll wait for you up to ten minutes past the posted start time if you're signed up and we expect you. Because we wait for you, please be responsible to us and let us know ASAP if you must cancel.
