If you haven’t seen this trestle you’ve surely heard about it. It’s the largest wooden trestle in the Commonwealth and it’s right in our backyard! Rather than taking the easy way out there (Mill Bay ferry) we’re going to take the scenic route along the Sooke Hills Wilderness trail and then the Cowichan Valley trail. Those trails will lead us through the Sooke Hills Wilderness Regional park and the Wrigglesworth Lake Regional park. Along these trails we’ll pass the Humpback Reservoir, cross the Goldstream River suspension bridge, bike through a thick forest and then climb about 400 metres before continuing along a trail lined with smaller trees and adorned with flowers. There are occasional views of Mount Baker. It’s an absolutely beautiful, winding, rolling trail that will take us all the way to the trestle.

After seeing the trestle we’re planning to stop at the Lakehouse at Shawnigan for lunch before catching the 4:10 PM ferry to Brentwood Bay and then returning to Janion plaza. We’ll bike on roads most of the way back.

So, you’ll see a lot on this ride. If you are considering coming please be aware that this is a challenging route given its length and a total elevation gain of ~1,100 meters. Almost all of the climbing will be on the gravel trail. It's hard packed in most places but still is somewhat challenging on the steeper sections.

That having been said, this will be a recreational ride. The group will pull over now and then to hydrate, chat, adjust clothing, wait for any slower riders.

Some nitty gritty: E-bikes that require pedaling are welcome. Strong cyclists with smoother tires can make their way up the steeper sections but knobby tires would be better. Everyone should bring at least 2 water bottles plus food. Layered clothing is probably a good idea. Sunscreen is essential. Come prepared to pay the one-way fare over to Brentwood Bay. There are public bathrooms at the start of the trail, mid-way and at the end. We can refill water bottles at the restaurant. We're planning on reserving tables (with a view likely) once we get a solid number of participants.

Please arrive a few minutes before 8 and don't expect to be back at Janion plaza before 6 PM.

Riders will not be allowed on the ride without being a paid-up member, unless you are a 1st timer and then you STILL MUST complete the waiver as soon as you sign up. Dues would then need to be paid before your 2nd ride.
