Brighton SMUG first meetup June 2011

First ever Brighton SMUG!

June the 14th will see our first Brighton SMUG meetup.

This week is the launch of SMUGS in the UK, they are a really popular useful and fun resource and down time for photographers in the states and so we are bringing this great way to connect and share over here! The Brighton SMUG will be the 2nd ever smug in the UK (london SMUG launches on monday 13th) and we have a great lighting Demo from Ian Pack and Rocky from SMUG coming over from the states for the UK launch.

The SMUG will be held in the studio, come down and chat to people, watch Ians lighting demo, share ideas and learn from eachother and you may even get some lovely refreshments as well ;-)

This will be happening on a monthly basis and its for YOU! for all the photographers of all levels in and around brighton. feed back and ideas are all welcome on activities we could do, speakers you would like to see, shoots you would like to try out. Anything and Everything photography related... thats what we are here for, to connect, help, support encourage and guide eachother.

What is a SMUG?

A SMUG is a place where you can learn, teach and meet up with other photographers who share your passion. It's also how we can tell you what's happening in our world and discover what's happening in yours. SMUGs are a great way to connect with other photographers and add a few weapons to your creative arsenal.

SMUGs are always free and open to photographers of all levels.

Outline: Strobology - The Art and Craft of Lighting with Small Flash

Creative lighting with Speedlites or hot shoe flash on and off camera with simple accessories. Lighting a model to create mood and drama; lighting the background to create a sense of depth. Bring your camera and flash for an opportunity to get some shots on the night.

During Brighton Photo Festival Ian gave a great talk on the live stage about lighting techniques, that was with studio lighting, so this time he will be focusing on using flash guns. with so much experience and expertise in the field this is NOT to be missed by the massive strobe community of photographers in Brighton.

Kirstie Blake: Photographer, owner of Eclectia Gallery & Studio and organiser of Brighton Photo Festival. Everything happening in and with the gallery studio and festival is all about promoting encouraging and supporting growth and development in the photographic industry within Brighton and as a whole. pretty much constantly either shooting or editing for her Clients or working on things for her exhibitors, the studio, courses or the festival photography isn't just what Kirstie does its who she is.

Raquel Bowles is currently working as the Community Development Director of SmugMug. She handles 76 SMUGs across the US, UK and Dubai! Raquel has a long history in the photographic industry working for Kodak, Pictage, ProShots as well as Pounds Labs. She will be talking a bit about SmugMug but will be on hand to help the SMUG come up with ideas for future events!

Ian Pack: Ian Pack currently works as a freelance photographer and trainer specialising in all forms of light and lighting for stills photographers. Ian's approach to lighting is simple available light - any light that's available, flash, daylight, tungsten, LED. He once lit an olive oil spread ad with Maglites to get the mood he was looking for.

Ian works closely with Park Cameras and Rosco Labs where he leads and designs practical photography workshops. Ian has worked in the photography and media business since the early 1980s and was an early adopter of digital technology.
