Change from the Inside Out
Details
How can we create ‘microclimates’ for learning and change inside organisations?
What can organisations learn from the natural world when it comes to creating a culture of learning and transformation?
In the natural world a microclimate is an area in which the weather conditions are different from that of the surroundings, and therefore have the power to grow things that can’t thrive in the wider environment.
Microclimates are also interesting because of their ability to ripple their impact. For example, in Kenya, large-scale ecosystem restoration can begin within a microclimate. ‘Stone lines’ are a technique for regreening dry land affected by climate change. By creating a pile of stones stretching across the land, the erosive force of water is halted whilst infiltration of water in the soil increases. Seeds are captured behind the stones, giving them time to sprout. As this small area becomes greener, it changes what is possible at the edges, and beyond.
Cultural microclimates can be created inside organisations too: within groups, teams, communities and programmes. The cultural ‘weather’ and power dynamics in these spaces are different to the status quo, changing what is possible for the people within them.
This event will explore how people create microclimates for change in a variety of contexts, and how organisations can foster the wider rippling of benefits.
