Permaculture Concepts: Gardens and Soils, or How to Create Regenerative Productivity

Each year, our corporate food systems spend billions of dollars on biocides and fertilizers, only to see increasing crop loss to pests. The same system is responsible for massive pollution, as well as the destruction of precious topsoil at rates 10 times faster than it is being replenished. Health disorders are running rampant as we struggle to make our bodies function without essential trace minerals traditionally found in soils. In the meantime, natural systems thrive without so much as a human finger lifted or a dollar spent in aid, all the while building topsoil and replenishing nutrient. What gives?

Michael and Kasey will take students deep into the intriguing dynamics of Living Soil. With a few surprisingly simple concepts gleaned from 3 billion years of Mother Nature's experience, students will learn to view their land and garden with new eyes. Practical advice will be given for how to design grow spaces for increased production and decreased input over time. Special attention given to regional soil and plant information. Class will take part in a hands-on activity to show how easy and low-cost it can be to create your own healthy soil.

As a student, you will learn:

the basic interacting functions of biology-rich soils and how to apply this information in your garden.

You will take away: a course outline, resource handout, and Soil Food Web diagram.

While there are no prerequisites for this course, concepts in this course will build upon others in this series. Students who have taken the Intro to Design course are encouraged to bring their design from that session.
