Please join us for our second DataPotluck!

Rough and flexible agenda:

Food! Either: Bring a dish or food item to share, OR Bring a few dollars to contribute if you're strapped for time, or volunteer to cook for the next meetup Nick and Young-Jin will cook up extra veggie-friendly plates to share for the crowd and there will be wine! Rountable Who's here, why, and how do you want to get involved? Talking tools, data sources and data: PRESENTATION CANCELLED: John Hunter (http://conference.scipy.org/scipy2012/talks/speakers.php), founder of the open source project matplotlib (http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/), a powerful feature-rich scientific plotting library written in python, will give an overview of open source python tools for use in data analysis and visualization (ipython (http://ipython.org/) and web notebook, matplotlib + ipython, pandas (http://pandas.pydata.org/)) NEW PRESENTATION: Tom Schenk Jr (http://tomschenkjr.net/about/) will give a presentation on a data visualization case study using Circos (http://circos.ca/) and D3's Chord diagram (http://mbostock.github.com/d3/ex/chord.html). Tom will introduce a particular type of graph and compare/contrast it in the two programming languages. Here is an examples of the data visualization he'll discuss: This was created using the Circos library (a Perl-based program): http://tomschenkjr.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/visualizing-transitions-poster-copy1.pdf This is a replicated version using D3, which incorporates interactivity: http://tomschenkjr.net/sandbox/visualizing-transitions.html Nick will talk about building data stores and large publicly available local and national data sets and give us an overview of what we hope to build up with DataPantry. We'll have an open discussion on which datasets to prepare for our DataPantry Open floor for talking about developing data and crafting projects. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Note: Please RSVP 24 hours ahead of the meetup since we need to supply an attendee name list to the front desk, and cook accordingly.
