Making Your Toolbox Shine with Shiny

In this talk, Mikhail Popov will introduce the package Shiny for developing interactive web applications in R ( http://www.rstudio.com/shiny/ ). The talk will cover the framework and many of the built-in elements through example applications, and will conclude with resources for learning more (e.g. installing Shiny Server on Amazon EC2).

A Coarse-Grained Exploratory Diachronic Analysis of a Corpus of Fidel Castro's Speeches and Interviews (1959-1996)

Scott Malec will be demonstrating the R statistical language's capabilities for performing corpus linguistics, exploratory analysis of unstructured data, and text mining. The end result will be a diachronic analysis of Fidel Castro's speeches in the form of a short mpeg video stream (using ffmpeg or similar utility) with images of month by month analyses of the texts with annotations for critical events such as assassination attempts. He will demonstrate the entire process from the procurement of raw data, through cleaning/curation, transformation from unstructured to structured representation, to the visually interesting result/product/curiosity mentioned above.

Cheers,

Susan
