WHY DO THIS COURSE:

The World Economic Forum 2016 identified complex problem solving as the top skill needed for 2015 & again for 2020. This FREE course is a set of techniques for complex problem solving. http://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/01/the-10-skills-you-need-to-thrive-in-the-fourth-industrial-revolution

Do you want to learn human-centered design skills FOR FREE and how this approach can be used to create innovative, effective, and sustainable solutions for social change?
I would like to offer free education/facilitation of events around human centred design for social innovation for this community which will be useful life skills in defining the challenges as well as finding solutions. Human centred design is a creative and collaborative problem solving techniques that starts and ends with people. I have been using these techniques for the past 3 years in business environments as well as in a social context. I noticed the Cambridge Hub has a big emphasis on homelessness and this is the same in many other cities. See other not-for-profits that have used the approach for homelessness: https://storify.com/LeadershipVicBC/innovation-in-action-using-human-centred-design

What is the course about?
The Course for Human-Centered Design is a seven-week curriculum that will introduce you to the concepts of human-centered design and how this approach can be used to create innovative, effective, and sustainable solutions for social change. This course has been created to reach those who are brand new to human-centered design, so no prior experience required.

Who offers the course?
Acumen - found here: http://acumen.org/ - Acumen raises charitable donations to invest in companies, leaders, and ideas that are changing the way the world tackles poverty. It has the largest learning platform in the world and aims to educate as many people in various areas to solve world social problems. The course has been designed in partnership with IDEO – one of the largest design agencies in the world. When I did this course a few years ago, it was the best set of training materials I had ever experiences and learning the skills during the course led me onto curating a journey of objectives such as learning how to be a story teller, a better active listener, how to be more empathetic….the list goes on…

When does the course start?
The next FREE course starts on the 18th Feb and is 5 classes over 7 weeks.

Make sure you register with the +Acumen site. +Acumen is the world's largest learning platform in the social sector. +Acumen is a new initiative started in 2012 with the vision of providing thousands of emerging leaders around the world with the skills and moral imagination they need to become more effective at changing the way the world tackles poverty.

Once you have registered, you will get an email with the notification of the course and you then have to decide to 'audit' or 'participate' in the course. It is preferable to set up a team or join one - We can agree team names at the meetup - I have set up a team group called: Cambridge Social Innovation which you can join. We will need multiple team groups as there are limits to participants in the online group. This will be great to see Cambridge continue on the map- these courses have been going for a few years and hardly anyone from Cambridge participates.

Add yourself on the Google Map on the +Acumen site - you will see this once you are registered.

The assignment schedule
You can view the schedule and you will be able to access The Introduction Guide and the Week 1 Reading + Week 1 Workshop material. We will divide ourselves in to groups of 4-6 people and each group needs to select a facilitator on a rotational basis. This gives you excellent experience and don't worry - its all fine and not daunting. The facilitator has to ensure the team keep time and moves the team on after each exercise.

Venue
I have booked The Box Cafe in Norfolk Street - Ozy is a very helpful owner of The Box Cafe and fortunately, I have been able to book the venue for the next 7 weeks. This is a non-paying event and I will incur personal costs (until I find a sponsor) even if you don't attend so please ensure you are committed to attending. Our last course participation was amazing - we did have people drop in on occasion and even each individual's presence providing an amazing contribution for that evening.

Time: 8-10pm

Dates for the next 7 weeks for the Human Centred Design for Innovation course:

Thursdays - DATES BELOW:

5th MAY, 12th MAY, 19th MAY, 26th MAY, 2nd JUNE, 9th JUN, 16th JUNE

Note: For those of you that cannot make all the dates, we can see if there are other times people can meet and we can arrange on a case by case basis.

What to bring
Sustenance for yourselves, stationery, printed copy of the Class 1 Workshop and all the subsequent workshop readings (if you can't print a copy, let me know & I will bring a copy). If you don't manage to the reading, its ok - we can talk about it there although you get more out of it and from each other if you do.

Upcoming Courses
There are SO many great courses coming up with +Acumen and I definitely have my favourites. I intend to review the courses with you to enable teams to choose what they are interested in and meet up. Have a look: http://plusacumen.org/courses/I would personally like to learn how to measure impact. I work in complex environments & transformations therefore showing how we adapt/evolve from the current state and baseline is really important - this is social, financial etc. If we can measure impact, it goes a long way to being able to demonstrate real change from a pain story to a vision story. These are ones I would like to do (as well as the rest...however you do have to choose). A number of people will be doing the LEAN DATA APPROACHES TO MEASURE SOCIAL IMPACT (online start date and registration from the 10th May). We will start on the 12th May at The Box Cafe and form groups for this. I have created a separate event for the that course so please register if you want to do that course instead. All courses rotate during the year and so you won't miss out on the choice you make.

Sponsorship for venue needed please? Further sponsorship for post it notes, food, drinks. Any suggestions welcome.
