Companies such as Google, Yahoo, Facebook and LinkedIn, have become hugely successful with new data based search, social and advertising products and services. From these companies a new Data Science and Data Infrastructure stack has emerged that is radically transforming businesses across the broad spectrum of industries and creating a burgeoning Big Data market. Data is the also powering the new markets of Internet-of-Things and the Industrial Internet. This talk is intended for entrepreneurs who want to start data-driven businesses, learn about the underlying Big Data technologies and best practices, and become leaders of the next wave of innovation in corporations.

Sumant Mandal, Founder, The Hive
Sumant Mandal is co-founder of The Hive that works with entrepreneurs to help create businesses and that leverage data. Sumant is a Managing Partner at Clearstone Venture Partners, an early stage, tech venture fund.
Clearstone has over $600 million invested, 9 IPOs, and nearly a dozen M&A exits, and has remained steadfast in its love of building great companies alongside great entrepreneurs. It was an early investor and leader in companies such as PayPal, Internet Brands, GoTo/Overture, and United Online.
Sumant spends his time and energy helping visionary entrepreneurs create companies around large markets. He has been part of creating companies in the online media world, and infrastructure technologies. Some of the companies where he has worked closely with the founding teams and helped incubate the company concepts are Rubicon Project (private), Cetas (sold to VMware), Apture (sold to Google), Ankeena Networks (sold to Juniper Networks), Mimosa Systems (sold to Iron Mountain), and Kazeon Systems (sold to EMC). He is currently on the board of a number of companies including Rubicon Project, BillDesk (India), Games2Win (India), Openbucks and ThisNext. Sumant initiated Clearstone's investment interests in India.
Prior to Clearstone, Sumant spent more than eight years as an entrepreneur involved in starting companies both in India and the United States.
Sumant has an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University. He is a Charter Member of TiE.
Arihant Patni, Managing Director, The Hive India
Arihant’s foray in the venture capital space came about when Patni Computer Systems was acquired in 2011 at a valuation of $1.5 billion which included a full exit for promoters and private equity investors. Currently, Arihant is the Managing Director of Patni Financial Advisors, a wealth management company, and Hive Technologies, a platform that invests in data analytics and data science (‘Big Data’) companies. He is also Co-Founder and on the Board of Directors of Nirvana Venture Advisors, a venture capital fund with focus on the internet space.
Arihant received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Chemical Engineering. He continued his education at Babson College, where he received his Masters of Business Administration (Magna Cum Laude), with a concentration in entrepreneurship. He then received a separate Masters Degree in Statistics from Columbia University.
Arihant began his career at his family business, Patni Computer Systems, one of the leading Indian IT businesses of the time, where he had a broad exposure to the business of the company, including positions in the computer software and human resources departments, as well as being a business development and marketing executive. After graduate school, Arihant continued his career in the IT space as co-founder and CEO of Bodhi Global Services, a legal support services company. The company was set up in collaboration with AZB & Partners, which is one of India’s leading law firms.
Derick Jose, Founder, Flutura
Derick Jose is the Chief Product Officer at Flutura Decision Sciences & Analytics. Flutura is deeply focussed on Platform solutions at the intersect of M2M and Big Data. Derick has more than 20 years of experience during which he was involved in solutioning at AT&T ( Piscataway), Nortel Networks ( Calgary), Lloyds Bank ( London ). Currently he is working on M2M+Big Data platform solutions in Intelligent building analytics, Real time Smart meter analytics and Telecom machine data analytics for security use cases. He is very passionate about solutions at the intersect of sensor data, deep machine learning and behavioural design. Derick had passed out of BITS Pilani and has applied for a patent at USPTO
T.M. Ravi, Founder, The Hive
T. M. Ravi is co-founder of The Hive that works with entrepreneurs to help create businesses and that leverage data. Ravi has a successful track record as a serial entrepreneur and operational executive.
Most recently, Ravi was Chief Marketing Officer for Iron Mountain, a provider of information management services. Ravi joined Iron Mountain through the acquisition of Mimosa Systems, the leader in enterprise content archiving, where he was founder and chief executive officer.
Before Mimosa, Ravi was founder and CEO of Peakstone Corporation that provided performance and capacity management solutions based on Bayesian approaches. Prior to his role at Peakstone, Ravi was vice president of marketing at Computer Associates (CA), where he was responsible for the core line of CA enterprise management products, including CA Unicenter as well as the areas of application, systems and network management, software distribution, help desk, security, and storage management. Ravi joined CA through the $1.2 billion acquisition of Cheyenne Software, the market leader in backup solutions. At Cheyenne Software, he was the vice president of the company's successful Windows NT business with products including ARCserve backup and InocuLAN antivirus. Prior to Cheyenne, Ravi founded and was chief executive officer of Media Blitz, a provider of Windows NT storage solutions that was acquired by Cheyenne Software.
Earlier in his career, Ravi worked in Hewlett-Packard's Information Architecture Group, where he did product planning for client/server and storage solutions. Ravi earned a MS and PhD in Computer Science from UCLA and a Bachelors of Technology in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, India.
Rajan Mehra, Managing Director, Nirvana Ventures
Rajan is a Co-founder and Managing Director at Nirvana venture Advisors. An MBA from the Darden Business School, USA, Rajan is an internet industry veteran, with 17 years of experience in consumer internet and business services. Before co-founding Nirvana, he was a venture partner at Clearstone Venture Advisors, the India Advisory of Clearstone Venture Partners, an early-stage venture capital firm based in Santa Monica, Ca. Prior to joining Clearstone, Rajan was Country Head for eBay in India and a member of the Asia Pacific Leadership Team of eBay, a role in which he ensured continued leadership for eBay India as the #1 e-commerce company in India. Prior to becoming Country Head, Rajan was Country Manager (New Ventures and Payments), a role in which he launched the PaisaPay escrow payment service and the Kijiji Classifieds platform.
Lance Riedel, CTO, The Hive
Lance Riedel is CTO at The Hive helping companies with the right data architecture and data science. He works closely with vendors throughout the entire big data and analytics ecosystems to develop best practices and frameworks for entrepreneurs and companies.
Lance has been working to improve search and matching technologies across multiple sectors for the last 15 years. He has been working the Hadoop stack since the early days 7 years ago when he was a founding member of Yahoo’s Computational Advertising group in the research group.
At Yahoo he and his team built out the first production system running on a Hadoop stack while at the same time developing new techniques to massively scale matching and recommendation engines. They published many papers on their work at WWW, SIGIR, and CIKM. Lance has also worked in enterprise search at Verity where he architected enterprise-wide search for many Fortune 500 companies and e-commerce sites.
Most recently Lance co-founded Proximal Labs which built out a massively scalable recommendation engine to match topic experts with threaded discussions. Since Proximal’s acquisition by Jive Software, he has led the architecture and implementation of a number of Jive’s core initiatives on a big data stack.
