Deep Learning Meetup #1: Primer + Applications in Computer Vision

Details

Hi all!

The first Deep Learning Meetup will provide a primer to those who are interested in deep learning, going through what it is, an industry overview tailored towards companies using deep learning for computer vision, and will have a speaker giving a talk on a specific application for computer vision.

We are happy to have NYU's Center for Genomics as our host!

Updated Schedule:

  1. 6:00 - 6:30 PM - Overview / Primer on deep learning

Maurizio Caló Caligaris, Stanford Computer Scientist & Former Researcher in Prof. Andrew Ng's Lab.

Speaker Bio: Maurizio Caló Caligaris is a Stanford computer scientist who spent more than three years working in Prof. Andrew Ng's research lab, where he did multimodal deep learning research applied to computer vision and natural language processing. He was the TA for Stanford CS department's highest enrollment class, CS229 (Machine Learning), and mentored numerous projects applying machine learning to areas such as social network analysis, finance, biology and robotics. He is now starting a company in the healthcare space.

  1. 6:30 - 7:00 PM - Comprehensive Landscape of Companies Using Deep Learning for Computer Vision

Eugene Joseph, Deep Learning NYC Meetup Organizer

Speaker Bio: Eugene is Head of Product for a computational genomics company in New York where he developed and launch genetic tests to help prevent sudden cardiac death and for hereditary cancers. He worked for Recombine, which was acquired in 2016, where he led New Ventures and analyzed where the future of genomics was headed. He worked in venture capital at NYC Seed and machine learning startups. He has done comprehensive analysis of many industries, and has a particular interest in applications of deep learning in biology & healthcare. He is an NYU graduate in Economics and Finance.

  1. 7:15 - 8:00 PM - Specific Industry Applications for Computer Vision and Deep Learning

Andrew Kae, Research Engineer at Curalate

Speaker Bio: Andrew Kae (http://www.andrewkae.com (http://www.andrewkae.com/)) has a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he worked on problems in image segmentation and character recognition. He is currently a Research Engineer at Curalate (https://www.curalate.com (https://www.curalate.com/)) where he works on applying deep learning to visual search. He is broadly interested in applications of machine learning to computer vision and other domains. And he is a native New Yorker.

  1. 8:00 - 8:20PM - Networking

If you have any questions, please send us a message at deeplearningmeetup@gmail.com

Again, our goal is to initially have basic / intermediate talks, which can help enable those who are getting started / thinking about translating deep learning to their specific use cases. We can also have separate more advanced technical workshops in the future.
