Programmer Career Paths (growing up and growing old as a programmer)

This topic is inspired by a post I read last week: http://thecodist.com/article/my-biggest-regret-as-a-programmer. While the author expresses deep regret for not becoming a manager, I feel like I would regret it if I had become a manager. So I thought this would be a great topic of discussion. Please check out the article before coming.

This topic will be discussion based, not a lecture. The conversation will be led by Chris Allport. Who was the youngest guy on every development team he worked on... until he wasn't. One day he looked around and found that he was the oldest guy on the team (and that was over 7 years ago). So he has a lot of opinions on the topics of Programmer career paths, improving himself, and staying relevant.

RefactorRVA is a general software topic user group. We were formerly CVREG, but have rebranded to reflect our interests do not just include Ruby. We get together the 2nd Tuesday of the month, and split our meetings between a conversational, round-table discussions and eyes-forward lectures.
