I've done parts of this hike, but never the whole thing. Always wanted to, so now here we are! I'll have mapped it out in advance--so we'll get there-don't worry.

Distance: 14 miles out and back

Elevation Gain: a little over 2,000 ft.

Altitude: Mt. Pinos is the tallest mountain in Ventura County at 8,831 ft.

Hike Rating: Strenous for its distance and altitude level. Be aware of your own hiking ability before you sign up for this hike. You must be able to complete 14 miles and hike at a high altitude.

What to bring:Food, at least 2 to 3 liters of water, wear hiking boots, poles, layered clothing, camera, bug spray/screen, sunscreen, and a positive attitude!

Hike Description:This is an amazingly beautiful hike. It starts at the top parking area for Mt. Pinos, and within 2 miles, you will reach the summit of Mt. Pinos. The summit is 8, 831 feet, which is a net gain from the parking area of 500 feet. I've done this part of the hike many times.

From here, you will take the Vincent Tumamait trail into Chumash Wilderness to Cerro Noreste (aka Mt. Abel), nearly 5 miles away with about 1500 additional feet of gain. Your mileage total will be close to 14 miles.

The scenery is incredible with tons of wildflowers and beautiful trees worthy of lots of photography!

Mt. Pinos is located in the Los Padres National Forest (http://www.pinemountainclubrealestate.com/Local-Area/LOS-PADRES-FOREST/los-padres-national-forest.html) and is the tallest mountain within the San Emigdio Mountain range.

The view from the summit of Mt. Pinos encompasses the southern Central Valley, the southernmost Sierra Nevada, much of northern Ventura county (http://portal.countyofventura.org/portal/page?_pageid=817,1&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL), much of the Santa Barbara County (http://www.countyofsb.org/) Mountains, and the Caliente Range and Carrizo Plain (http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/bakersfield/Programs/carrizo.html). Bakersfield (http://www.bakersfield.com/) and the surrounding towns are visible on a clear evening to the north and northeast. The summit of the mountain itself is relatively flat and open, with several subsidiary summits covered in pines and separated by brushy areas.

Directions to trailhead: Head north on I-5. Exit at Frazier Park and turn left. Follow the main road for 21 miles all the way to the Nordic Hut Parking Lot.
