This is the first of five courses being offered that will cover nearly the entire Canyon Guides International Recreational Canyon Leadership Competencies (excluding Swiftwater). Whether you're new to canyoneering or are looking to take on a leadership role, these courses will offer you the opportunity to make the most of this canyoneering season!

  • L1 - Intro to Technical Canyoneering - 2 Days - August 9-10
  • L2/L3 - Intro to Canyon Leadership - 2 Days - August 30-31
  • Advanced Anchors and Potholes - 3 Days - September 12-14
  • Mechanical Advantage - 2 Days - September 20-21
  • Canyon Rescue - 2 Days - September 27-28

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR:
Never touched a rope? No Problem! This is a great course for beginner canyoneers interested in becoming more self-sufficient in their canyon pursuits. It is also a great opportunity for self-taught canyoneers, newer participants transitioning from other rope-oriented sports, or those wanting to polish their skills in a structured curriculum.

If you're looking to build a solid foundation that prepares you for future leadership assessments offered by recreational and professional guide organizations, this course is also a great start. We will cover many of the competencies highlighted in the entry level and technical level progressions found in Canyon Guides International Competencies Checklist.

Risk Management
Gear Selection, Use & Care
Knot Craft
Forces-Friction
Anchors & Rigging
Techniques on Rope
Basic Self-Rescue

PREREQUISITES:
There are no prerequisites for this course. Beginner canyoneers are welcome and encouraged!

WHAT TO BRING:
Please bring any and all canyoneering gear you have. We can provide any gear you don't have - no charge. Please message us to let us know what gear you need to borrow. Recommended gear:

  • Helmet
  • Harness - Canyon Style Preferred
  • Simple Lanyard
  • Rappel Device - Canyon Style Preferred
  • 5 HMS screw-lock carabiners
  • 12-14 feet accessory cord, 6-7mm (knot tying practice)
  • 20 feet of webbing, 1-inch tubular (knot tying practice)

Please bring clothing/layers appropriate for the weather. Temperatures, wind, and precipitation can change throughout the day. Please make sure you are comfortable. Don't forget plenty of food, snacks, and water to keep you going.

LOCATION:
This course will take place near in the North Wash area near Hanksville, UT. All instruction will take place outdoors, beginning in an outdoor classroom setting followed by applying the concepts on the sandstone.

TRANSPORTATION:
Transportation to and from the training locations will not be provided. A standard passenger vehicle will be sufficient to get to all locations. Sign up with a friend and you'll have a carpool buddy! Meeting locations will be communicated after your registration has been confirmed.

WHERE TO STAY:
Lodging is not included. If primitive camping is your style, there are 100's of dispersed sites near the training locations. If you prefer to stay in town, we recommend Duke's Slickrock Campground and RV Park for Tents, RV/Vans, or Private Cabins. If staying at Duke's, mention you are in town for a Sticks and Stones course and you'll receive a 10% discount on your stay. Whispering Sands Motel is another great option when staying in Hanksville. RATE:
$350/person

There is a 4 student minimum for this course. If the minimum isn't met, full refunds will be provided. There is a 10 student maximum so sign up before it fills.

PAYMENT POLICY:
Payments are refundable until 14 days before the course begins. Cancellations after this date are Non-Refundable. All payments incur a non-refundable booking fee of $25.
