One of five courses being offered this year that will cover nearly the entire Canyon Guides International Recreational Canyon Leadership Competencies (excluding Swiftwater). Whether you're new to canyoneering or are looking to take on a leadership role, these courses will offer you the opportunity to make the most of this canyoneering season!
- L1 - Intro to Technical Canyoneering - 2 Days - August 9-10
- L2/L3 - Intro to Canyon Leadership - 2 Days - August 30-31
- Advanced Anchors and Potholes - 3 Days - September 12-14
- Mechanical Advantage - 2 Days - September 20-21
- Canyon Rescue - 2 Days - September 27-28
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR:
This course is a continuation of our season-long curriculum designed to help students master the CGI Recreational Canyon Leadership Competencies. This course is great for students working to complete the Level 3 CGI Recreational Leader assessment.
Topics Covered will include:
Students will receive in-dept instruction on Mechanical Advantage systems that apply to various canyoneering scenarios. As a standalone Mechanical Advantage course, students will have the opportunity to comprehend principles behind the systems/techniques being covered through progressive learning and extended time for practice and application.
PREREQUISITES:
Completion of Technical Canyoneering (L1) Course
OR
Mastery of all competencies from CGI EL and L1 checklists. The course will not slow down for those without EL+L1 skills.
WHAT TO BRING:
Please bring any and all canyoneering gear you have.
Required gear:
- Helmet
- Harness - canyon style preferred
- Lanyard
- Rappel Device - canyon style required (no ATC or Figure 8)
- 6 HMS screw-lock carabiners
- VT Prusik (1 minimum)
- 12-14 feet of 6-7mm accessory cord
- 20 fee of webbing, 1-inch tubular
- 2 quicklinks, 5/16 inch
- Totem or Figure 8 (for rigging)
- 180-240cm Dyneema Sling
- MicroTraxion
- Ascender - Croll, Basic or Tibloc
- Mini Pulley or Locking RollClip Carabiner - 80% efficient or better
Please bring clothing/layers appropriate for the weather. Temperatures, wind, and precipitation can change throughout the day. Please make sure you are comfortable. Don't forget plenty of food, snacks, and water to keep you going.
LOCATION:
This course will take place near Hanksville, UT. All instruction will take place outdoors, beginning in an outdoor classroom setting followed by applying the concepts in multiple canyons.
TRANSPORTATION:
Transportation to and from the training locations will not be provided. A standard passenger vehicle will be sufficient to get to all locations. Sign up with a friend and you'll have a carpool buddy! Meeting locations will be communicated after your registration has been confirmed.
WHERE TO STAY:
Lodging is not included. If primitive camping is your style, there are 100's of dispersed sites near the training locations. If you prefer to stay in town, we recommend Duke's Slickrock Campground and RV Park for Tents, RV/Vans, or Private Cabins. If staying at Duke's, mention you are in town for a Sticks and Stones course and you'll receive a 10% discount on your stay. Whispering Sands Motel is another great option when staying in Hanksville. RATE:
$350/person
There is a 4 student minimum for this course. If the minimum isn't met, full refunds will be provided. There is a 8 student maximum so sign up before it is full.
PAYMENT POLICY:
Payments are refundable until 14 days before the course begins. Cancellations after this date are Non-Refundable. All payments incur a non-refundable booking fee of $25.
