8LU Keynote by Eric Smith - Write Your Game in Rust!

Online event

Join us Friday, December 10th for an 8th Light University Livestream presentation by 8th Light principal developer, Eric Smith.

Write Your Game in Rust!

SCHEDULE:

12:30 pm CDT /6:30 pm GMT- Announcement
12:35 pm CDT / 6:35 pm GMT- Presentation
After - Questions/Networking

ABOUT THE TALK:

If you’ve wanted to make games, as a hobby or a pro, for years now you’ve really only had a few choices. For the desktop it’s C++ or C#, and for the web it’s JavaScript. Programming languages have been advancing year after year and yet we’re still using old standards, well no more!

For Stack Overflow’s most loved language, Rust, we’re more than ready to start making games. We’ll go over the tools we have including:

• Rendering
• Structuring Code
• Engines

And show how those tools are as good or better than what we had a few years ago in the old standbys. If you’re interested in Rust, but thought it wasn’t ready for game development, I hope this talk will convince you otherwise.

SPEAKER:

Eric Smith is an experienced software crafter at 8th Light with experience in Web, Mobile and Game development. He’s designed innovated software solutions for some of 8th Light’s largest and most challenging clients. A consummate polyglot, Eric has deliberately worked on projects that force him to build complicated products and employ many different languages to reinforce his code sense.

When he’s not developing software Eric has also trained teams and individuals both through the Weirich Institute of Software and as 8th Light clients. He’s trained teams of all sizes to adopt software’s best practices, and test various challenging portions of their system.

Eric earned both his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and his Master’s of Science Degree in Video Game Development from DePaul University. You can find him talking about software, his kids and the Chicago Cubs on twitter @paytonrules.
