Could our civilizational predicament be caused by our brain hemispheres being unbalanced?

This meeting will be about Iain McGilchrists work which explores the relationship between the brain's two hemispheres. The implications are far greater than an interesting finding in neuropsychology. McGilchrist finds that our unconscious understanding about reality itself is determined by the way the hemispheres work. Each provides a VERY different understanding of reality, which we need to balance in order to achieve a healthy and harmonious life. He argues that

"in the modern West we are often misled by the left hemisphere’s inveterate tendency to neglect the right hemisphere’s contribution and ‘go it alone’. ... we are constantly crashing, and puzzled as to why; constantly faced with paradoxical outcomes to our actions.... We often find that we strive for something and achieve its precise opposite. Why is that? I suggest it is because our currently dominant model of reality is mistaken."

His work (over 2,000 pages across his two latest books) is exceptionally well researched and has been lauded globally.

This 11 minute video (imaginatively and amusingly animated) is a highly condensed summary of his ideas. You may need to watch it a few times, and pause it to examine and fully appreciate the graphics, to pick up all the points.

Hope to see you there.
