What form of politics best supports transforming humanity?
Details
We know democracy as we know it needs a major upgrade, but to what? We could (should?), for example, consider refinements such as:
Deliberative Democracy, Direct Democracy, Liquid Democracy and Digital Democracy
all of which, in different ways, involve greater citizens involvement in decision-making.
Or we could consider Sortition, where random, but representative, citizens are selected to be the decision makers.
Or even Anocracy - a hybrid democratic-authoritarian system. This could be advantageous when unpopular decisions are needed for the very survival of society.
But perhaps a better approach would be to focus on core underlying principles that are needed for future governance, and consider how we might evolve our current system towards adopting these principles.
That is the nature of the Metamodern approach to politics, as expounded by Hanzi Freinacht. His Medium article 3 Design Principles for Protopian Governance explain these ideas. A summary for the vision of Protopian governance is:
A large set of different units of governance that are tailored to maximize the collective intelligence with which different topics are managed, which are laterally connected into a meshwork of mutual influence, and which continuously evolve by periodically updating their constitutional forms and the stated purposes they serve.
Governance and politics is self-evidently one of the most critical issues relating to Humanity’s Transition. Let’s discuss these ideas, along with any others that attendees wish to bring to the table.
UPDATE:
I've written an article on LinkedIn with more background. You can access it here.
Possible questions:
- What are the routes to getting these ideas heard?
- Who are the people that need to hear them?
- What, exactly, would be the message?
- Is there scope for anything locally?
