I am thrilled to announce Smart in the City's next Meetup will take place on July 23rd July 2020 from 5:30pm - this will be an online video (link will be posted nearer the time).

The subject matter for the evening will be shared thoughts & experiences on the application of Bluetooth within the engineering world. Questions will be welcomed at the end.

Our speaker, Martin Woolley works for the Bluetooth SIG, the technical standards body for Bluetooth. He’s an industry veteran with over 30 years’ experience and has a degree in Computing and Mathematics. Martin is the Bluetooth SIG's Senior Developer Relations Manager for the EMEA region and is responsible for informing, educating and supporting developers in the region. He will be doing a technical talk on Introduction to Bluetooth Mesh for Developers and then a technical talk on Bluetooth Location Services and High Accuracy Direction Finding.

Bluetooth mesh is a new Bluetooth technology which allows secure networks of tens of thousands of devices to be formed and one of the primary applications that Bluetooth mesh was created for is the truly smart, connected building. It was designed from the outset with reliability, security and scalability as key goals and with the ability to meet the sophisticated and technically challenging engineering requirements of smart buildings, smart industry and beyond. This session will explore the concepts, technicalities and uses of Bluetooth mesh networking and resources for gaining hands-on experience of the technology will be introduced.

Bluetooth can be used for many types of location service and it’s an area forecast to experience the biggest growth in the next few years, with 431 million location related devices shipping in 2023. In 2019, Bluetooth acquired a new capability which allows the direction of a signal to be accurately determined using one of two methods known as Angle of Arrival (AoA) or Angle of Departure (AoD). Come to this session and hear about this Bluetooth location services and the new direction finding feature, how it works and the uses it’s likely to be put to.
