second recommenders.ie meetup

Details
I am excited to invite you to our next event, which will take place in the new Zalando offices in Dublin, 1st July – 6:30pm to 8:30 pm. This time we will have two great speakers who will present and demo some of their work.
Talk 1 : Music Temporal Context Identification: Discovering Christmas, by Cameron Summers (Gracenote, USA)
Gracenote powers recommendation and search systems world-wide with its entertainment data ecosystem. This session will examine how to enrich that ecosystem with algorithmic analysis of big data from Internet radio. Specifically, examining how listening behaviors change over time can provide insight into the relationship between music and culture.
Cameron is a Research Engineer at Gracenote. After a music career that included performances at the Grammy's with the Foo Fighters and on Grammy-nominated recordings, he now focuses on technical research in machine listening and music recommendations.
Talk 2: A new direction for recommender systems: balancing privacy and personalisation, by Benjamin Heitmann (Insight Centre for Data Analytics, NUIG)
In this talk, Benjamin Heitmann will introduce a new direction for future recommender systems: the idea of balancing privacy and personalisation when designing a personalisation approach. First, recent events which form the motivation for this new direction are introduced, then the basics of current personalisation approaches and how they approach data collection are presented. After that, several different aspects of balancing privacy and personalisation are discussed, which will show that this is a wide open topic for research and innovation.
Benjamin Heitmann is a post-doctoral researcher at Insight Centre, NUI Galway in the Information Mining and Retrieval Unit.He received his Ph.D. in 2014 from NUI Galway. The topic of his thesis is a framework for cross-domain personalisation using semantic interest graphs. His research interests include personalisation using knowledge graphs; the architecture of data intensive ecosystems; and approaches for balancing privacy and personalisation.
Talk 3: Finding what to wear together using BigData, by Boris von Loesch (Zalando)
In fashion retail, finding items that can be worn together and presenting complete outfits are very interesting use-cases for item-based recommendations. This session will show why this problem is challenging and how to tackle it with collaborative methods.
Dr. Boris von Loesch is the product owner for recommendation and fashion search at Zalando. After his PhD in mathematics, he started working for Zalando and has built with his colleagues a flexible and scalable in-house recommender system that serves millions of customers via various channels.
