Meetup Mashup - Quantified Self and Internet of Things

Details

Quantified Self - The use of personal data to improve one's health and well-being - tracking exercise, sleep patterns, diet and other factors and making lifestyle changes based on the results.

A key growth area for Hardware Startups has been the Quantified Self movement. New sensors, protocols and interfaces are making it easier than ever for individuals to track and affect their personal statistics on a daily basis. We will discuss what it takes to bring a QS product to market, and how developers must strike a balance between aesthetics, usability and functionality.

As part of Startup Week Vancouver (http://www.startupweekvancouver.ca/), we are holding our first meet-up mashup. Along with Vancouver's Quantified Self (https://www.meetup.com/Quantified-Self-Vancouver/) meet-up, we are excited to showcase new products by local teams. Both are in the midst of crowdfunding campaigns, so this is your chance for a first look at the products, to ask questions and show your support.

In addition to the QS talks we are bringing a founder of an open source hardware and software IoT company to present his exciting project, the path he took and the upcoming Kickstarter campaign.

Come join us for a night of talks and discussion about the growing world of personal data tracking, IoT, sensors and enabling hardware.

Social and networking session will follow. Thanks to our new sponsor for the evening, the Vancouver Economic Commission (http://www.vancouvereconomic.com/). Drinks and snacks will be provided!

Our Speakers for the night include:

Kevin R. Hart - TZOA Wearable Enviro-Tracker (http://www.mytzoa.com)

Sarah Goodman - iHeart Physiological Age System (http://www.iheartalive.com/)

David Manuel - The Perfect Meat Thermometer (http://www.lab-i5.com)

TZOA, Wearable Enviro-Tracker

You track your steps, calories, and weight, but how do you quantify your environment? TZOA is the first wearable enviro-tracker; a fashionable way to monitor air pollution and UV exposure, whether you want to improve your health, explore your surroundings, or understand the environment. TZOA’s air quality sensor was custom built: a state-of-the-art optical particle counter that fits in the palm of your hand.

TZOA is a community of change-makers that are helping to create a street-level air pollution map of Vancouver and the world. Imagine being able to identify the cleanest and dirtiest areas around us! Please join us as we discuss an exciting new device, your feedback and support are needed to make this a success.

The iHeart system measures aortic stiffness, a proven indicator of internal health. The device is a fingertip oximeter that connects via Bluetooth 4.0 to the user's iPhone or iPad loaded with the iHeart Physiological Age App. In a quick 30 second non-invasive test the user is provided with a number: their physiological age. With regular testing and positive lifestyle choices, the user can watch themselves get younger from the inside out. iHeart is a totally new way to monitor fitness and health.

David Manuel, The Perfect Meat Thermometer

The Perfect Meat Thermometer takes the guesswork out of cooking meat. The Perfect Meat Thermometer is an Arduino based open sourced hardware and software cloud connected meat thermometer that uses a patent-pending crowd sourced cooking algorithm to take the guesswork out of cooking meats. The Perfect Meat Thermometer's probe is connected to a small counter-top Arduino device running a wifi chipset that posts the meat temperatures to the cloud for processing. An iOS/Android cloud connected app monitors the progress of the cooking session giving the user feedback on when the meat will be done to perfection. The Perfect Meat Thermometer will launch on Kickstarter in early 2015.
