[VIRTUAL REALITY HACKATHON Part 2]

Details

Please note the date of the hackathon has been postponed to February 12-13!

We’re super excited to announce Part 2 of our upcoming virtual reality (VR) and drone related hackathon series and invite you to come join us!!

We'd like to collaborate on this hackathon with you. Starting the afternoon of Friday, February 12th at 4pm and continuing all day Saturday - we invite you to join in the spirit of hackathon, drones, and virtual reality with us. We want to do this because we feel that innovation is best demonstrated by bringing ideas to life, even if the first version may not be perfect.

The Idea:

At Pulilab we are looking to enter the Virtual Reality (VR) space and to create something that’s never been done before with VR.

Our mission with this project is to be able to be somewhere else -- virtually. This would be done by controlling a drone, hooked up to 2 cameras, through movements made on a virtual reality headset. Natural movements made by the user's head [wearing the VR headset] would control the drone movements and the cameras would mimic the user’s vision, bringing live feed back to the virtual reality headset.

Due to the complexity of the project, we have divided the hackathon into a 3-part series, in order to focus on specific parts of this VR product as well as give you the opportunity to join a session that’s right for you!

The 3-part VR hackathon series.

Part 1. Controlling a platform with small motors using the input from a VR device (https://blog.pulilab.com/virtual-reality-hackathon-part-1-controlling-a-platform-with-small-motors-using-the-input-from-ad1738c95b37#.bejhhygs4)

Part 2. Get 2 moving camera feeds onto the VR device // January 15-16 2016

Part 3. Optimize for high speed and high bandwidth video links. // February 2016

Agenda:

Friday

4PM: Arrive & form teams

4.30 & onwards: Research into the night

Saturday

9 AM: Sprint & task planning

10 AM - 8PM: Hackathon

8.30PM: Team presentations

Who should join?

Join us if you are:

• a ‘hardware guy’ (electronic engineer) looking to get familiar VR SDKs and Raspberry Pi GPIO

• a software guy, keen on hacking & scripting in Python (Raspberry Pi)

• a VR / drone specialist or enthusiast

What will you get from us?

• Free beers & pizza

• Pulilab ‘Tweet-worthy (https://twitter.com/Pv/status/578040760060149760)’ T-shirts

• All the hardware [VRs, Raspberry Pi, Dev Kits, etc] & support you need for the project

• An awesome experience to work together with fellow engineers and push your skills to the limit and work on something epic.

How to participate?

If this is something for you, we’d love for you to join!

Participation is free of charge, we simply ask you to confirm your participation on this form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1t1vgdKGx4_HR_xHlmwdLrWloVJoP4k7N1aESBE5sWys/viewform?usp=send_form)

In the coming days we will hand select individuals who RSVP-ed and send you an email / ping you with instructions.

If you do not get selected this time around, no worries, we will have Part 3 coming up soon!

In case you’re wondering what this is. A hackathon is:

• when engineers decide to stay up all night and just build stuff

• a chance to work on the ideas we've been thinking about for the last couple months, to turn "Wow, wouldn't it be cool if..." into "Hey, I just built this cool thing."

• a time to eat & drink unlimited pizza and beers.

• when you unleash your coding and design talents to build prototypes of projects you’ve always wanted to build but never had time during their regular hours

• Sometimes the best way to find out if an idea is good is to try it out, and that's part of what a hackathon lets us do.

If you have any questions about the hackathon, feel free to get in touch with us at: hello@pulilab.com
