Afie Jurvanen isn’t from the Bahamas. He’s a Finnish-Canadian from Barrie–a working class town in rural Ontario. But his chosen epithet is fitting. Since 2009 he’s been making music under the name Bahamas–writing songs about sunsets, love affairs, and making out with crooked smiles. Through simple arrangements, he charts an escape route from the snow belt to the coral reefs. His new album, Barchords, was released in 2012 to critical praise:
'Afie "Bahamas" Jurvanen is acclaimed in his native Canada but won't be known to UK audiences unless you've been paying special attention to Feist's backing band, with whom he played guitar and piano. Now's the time to get properly acquainted because his British debut is a gem: a warm, sun-dappled record with an appealing snag of heartache. Much of languid opener "Lost in the Light" feels like a post-break-up plea delivered from a hammock, while "Overjoyed" plots a leisurely course through self-reproach to redemption. Lambchop and M Ward fans will certainly be smitten but Jurvanen's versatile talents deserve a wider audience still.' The Guardian
'Barchords is a gorgeous, full-bodied recording that revels in spare but intensely flavorful textures. It’s that delightfully rare kind of record that commands an instant replay.' Los Angeles Times
'A reserved yet melodically rewarding exploration of relationships and heartache.' The New Yorker
'A sublime, incomparable leading man, one with a soulful, sweet and stylish touch in his song-writing.'Globe and Mail
'Barchords is a work of impeccably concise and considered songcraft.' Toronto Star
