ABSTRACTS:

Contiki OS - Open Source Operating System for Constained Systems by Harald Pichler (https://www.meetup.com/IoT-Vienna/members/134441962/) from http://www.osdomotics.com

Contiki is an open source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source) operating system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system) for networked, memory-constrained systems with a particular focus on low-power wireless Internet of Things (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_of_Things) devices. Examples of where Contiki is used include street lighting systems, sound monitoring for smart cities, radiation monitoring systems, and alarm systems. Contiki was created by Adam Dunkels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Dunkels) in 2002 and has been further developed by a world-wide team of developers.

David, Goliath and the IoT by Michael Boyle (https://www.meetup.com/IoT-Vienna/members/75785982/) from http://www.procurrosolutions.com

Join an interactive session where we jointly explore the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the hardware startup.

Who needs to attend: Those involved or looking to get involved in a hardware startup. Those interested in the subject matter. Those looking for an interactive experience.

Takeaways: A better knowledge of the pitfalls and opportunities for a hardware startup entrepreneur

The Internet of Things starts at Home - Opportunities and Challenges by Daniel Marischka from http://www.flatout-technologies.com

Starting with a brief explanation about the IoT with a focus on differentiating between its verticals (Fitness/Health, Transportation, etc.). At the moment there are interoperable and proprietary systems, so we will look at the pros and cons. Last but not least, a bit of digging into APIs and looking at them as a success factor, also posing the issue of the platform-problem.

Startup-Stories: Why I move my Austrian wireless-mesh startup to California by Franz Boehm from http://www.roofnode.com

Franz founded Roofnode, the smallest ISP in Austria. His vision is to extend high-speed Internet beyond cities towards families living in villages. To achieve this he builts proprietary wireless-mesh devices based on 5GHz WiFi. Now he is on the move to USA because he feels that Austria is too small for his ambitious plans.

Flying Sharks and M2M by Florian Pirchner (https://www.meetup.com/viennajs/members/81262802/), Klemens Edler and Sabrina Hopf from http://www.lunifera.com

Some day a certain idea popped up in my head - what if I could hold a shark as a pet... in my flat? But how to proceed? My bathtub would probably be to small for him and I would risk trouble with the veterinary inspection office. Still the idea would not let go of me so I decided to have at least a bit of it realized by holding a remote controlled shark.

I bought some helium - combined it with OSGi, Vaadin UI, Paho, m2m.eclipse.org, a tiny Beagle Bone black, Mihini, Lua and an Arduino board. Preparing some electronic circuts and did some minor hacks to implement a proper controller. And here we are... my very own sharky started to swim... in my flat.

At my talk at the IoT Talks July 2014 I will demo how simple it is to remote control an airswimmer ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOPImRA2AlI ) using m2m (MQTT). All the steps required to implement the final solution will be explained in detail and I am going to provide this information including the electric circuts at github. So a construction kit is available for your own experiments.

To make things more interesting, sharky will be able to swim manoveurs by himself. Complex commands may be passed to sharky and he will follow my instructions. Everything is handled by the beagle bone black and arduino.

In the most unlikely case that sharky gets out of control; no panic! Lie down flat on the stomach, protect your head with the arms and wait until sharky has passed by.
