Tips for Designing a REST API
Hosted by Detroit Software Guild

PRESENTATION:
Building a useful website or mobile app today often requires consuming or sending data to - well, some place other than your frontend app. In fact, if you've heard of "full stack developers", you probably know that there is an entire world of data behind your application that the user doesn't see, but is created and maintained by someone.
Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are one way that data gets between the frontend and the backend systems. Often these APIs are pre-existing, e.g. Google Maps, Facebook, Open Weather, but you might encounter a project where there is no web API yet, and you'll need to build it. Other developers (and your future self) will thank you if you take time to thoughtfully design your API, so let's talk about the basics of API design and construction with a focus on RESTful endpoints.
What will we cover?
- API basics: why would you need one?
- SOAP, JSON, FUZZ APIs (one of those is made up)
- RESTful APIs
- What makes a good API?
- Tips for working with third party APIs
Who is this for?
- Developers (or those interested) in API development but have little to no experience in this area.
- Developers already doing API projects that are interested in API best practices.
- ANYONE WHO HAS EVER USED A THIRD PARTY API FOR ANYTHING EVER.
Chris is an iOS and Web developer at Detroit Labs. He's spent his career developing applications for online stores, restaurants, automotive companies, and libraries. Chris fell in love with programming on the TI-82 calculator in high school, and has been amazed any time he can get something to show on a user's screen ever since.
