Rapid prototyping for the IoT with Node-RED

Details

Node-RED is a visual tool for wiring the IoT. Traditional software development can be very technical: Access to hardware interfaces requires skills in C or assembler, output of data to web services or sending tweets and emails requires the use of complex APIs or at least familiarity with relevant libraries. Node-RED takes care of such technicalities and lets you concentrate on the logic of your workflow.
In the first part, I'm going to give a general introduction into Node-RED and show how it can be used on a local computer as well as in the cloud.
In the second part, you can get your hands dirty and learn flow-based programming by building a simple chat application in Node-RED.

Boris is a research group leader at the University of Cambridge and deals with "big data" in molecular biology. He has recently founded thingslearn, where he is using established computational biology strategies to tackle IoT data challenges. Being a fanatic Node-RED user from its early versions, he's published a range of tutorials aimed at beginners and also authored a guide on using IoT data platforms with Node-RED. Boris uses Node-RED on EVERY machine: on desktops, laptops, Raspberry Pis and in the cloud.
