What we're about

Calling all adventure lovers! A Lark About is your one stop meetup for all things fun. By definition, a lark, in addition to being a bird, is something done for fun, an amusing adventure or escapade, to engage in harmless fun or mischief...often used with 'about'. Hence, A Lark About.

We will go on historical walking tours of St Augustine, Jacksonville, and Fernandina Beach; fun events like Mosaic Art classes and Sip & Paint; hiking, biking, kayaking, and camping outings; as well as other fun Larks like scavenger hunts, comedy clubs, and escape rooms.

Thanks for your interest in and joining A Lark About. Please tell your friends too.

EVENT FULL – NO WAIT LIST AVAILABLE Unfortunately, the Meetup site does not support wait lists for event with fees. If someone cancels, there will be an opening and that opening will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis. MANATEES & MORE Blue Spring State Park is a Manatee Refuge each winter. In addition to seeing manatees up close, we will be busy as this weekend event involves FIVE events! Please read the full event schedule. It’s a lot of information, and most of your questions should be answered below…thank you. RESERVE TODAY Advanced planning ensures you can reserve a campsite or cabin, as the park will sell out. As of March 13, there were 25 camping sites and 0 cabins available. Go to reserveamerica.com (link below). I am staying cabin #6. I am arriving Friday, December 11 and departing Sunday, December 13. Reserve America website: https://www.reserveamerica.com/explore/blue-spring-state-park/FL/281101/overview If you plan to arrive Saturday to hike at 9 am and stay the night, it will be too soon to check in that morning. Tell the ranger you are here now to go on a 9 am hiking outing and will come back to check-in after the hike. They might let you check-in then, or they might ask you to come back later. SHARE A SITE Campsites and cabins are allowed two vehicles each. A campsite may have a camper and two tents, while cabins have two bedrooms and a sleeper sofa and can hold up to six people. EVENT SCHEDULE Friday, December 11 • 6:00 pm: Attend the Deland Artisan Alley Farmers Market. This is a fun event with lots of vendors selling a variety of items, food, & drinks. Saturday, December 12 • 9:00 am: Hike five miles of the park’s trail system. • 12:00 pm: Bike 15 miles roundtrip to Deland, including a stop at the Elusive Grape (see below for more details) and/or time for lunch & shopping. • 6:00 pm: Pot luck fellowship dinner around a fire pit at cabin #6 while eating, drinking, and making s’mores! Please bring munchies to share. Sunday, December 13 • 9:00 am: Kayak a four-mile portion of the St John’s River and Snake Creek. This is often a great opportunity to see manatees up close & personal. KAYAK & HIKE OUTINGS The kayak & hike outings we will meet in the parking lot at the very end of the park road. There are two parking lots towards the end of the park road: Do not turn right into the first parking lot; simply keep going straight and you will end up in the correct parking lot. The kayak launch is at the furthest end of the parking lot. Most of the paddle takes place on Snake Creek, which is narrow and shaded and provides great views or birds, turtles, and sometimes gators! For the hike, the trailhead is easily accessible from the same parking lot as the kayak outing. The trail is mostly flat, some on firm ground and some on sandy ground. KAYAK RENTAL INFORMATION https://www.sjrivercruises.com/nature-tours/kayak-and-canoe-rentals-and-tours.html BIKE OUTING The bike outing will meet at the ranger station. We start off on a beautiful paved bike trail, and the last part of the ride is along the side of a couple paved, lightly travels city roads. We’ll park and lock our bikes in town and then have a couple hours to enjoy the walking, shopping, and restaurants of beautiful downtown Deland.
