Autistic Adults of Greater Savannah (AAGS) was founded in May 2018 when its founder was surprised to discover that neither Savannah nor its surrounding cities offered any Meetup groups—or even traditional support groups!—for adults whose daily lives are affected by autism/Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Our mission is to provide opportunities for autistic adults to make friends with other adults like them (known affectionately as "Aspies" within the autism community) and to ultimately feel empowered by—not ashamed of—their "disorder" in a fun, accepting atmosphere.
FAQ's [Updated 12/27/18]:
• WHO CAN JOIN THIS GROUP?: Everyone on the spectrum is welcome! This group is open to all autistic adults and their families and/or any support person that individual with ASD may require in order to participate successfully at public events.
• WHERE ARE YOUR MEETUPS HELD?: We have 3+ social events per month (i.e., game night, lunch/dinner at a local restaurant, etc.), as well as one recurring group meeting per month.
• DOES IT COST ANYTHING?: No. We don't collect membership fees.
Cats and coffee! What more do you need?! (Well, that is, unless you don't drink coffee and are allergic to cats... but that's beside the point!)
Despite providing their, um, own brand of unconditional love and comfort shall we say, cats have been known to perform miracles in healing.
Many studies have shown that cats have the magical ability to calm one's nerves, lower blood pressure, help prevent and treat cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic pain and even strengthen your immune system.
It's also be noted that cats (with the right temperament!) have been used to help kids with developmental disorders like autism be more comfortable with the world around them.
So why not adults?
Come join us for some cuddly, feline therapy at Purrvana!
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS A FEE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS MEETUP. According to Purrvana's website, there is a charge of $9.00 to spend one (1) hour with their adoptable cats.
Hope to see you there!
