SoCal Skills Practice Session (Canyoneering Skills)

YOU MUST GOTO THIS LINK TO SIGNUP! https://www.meetup.com/Canyoneering-Karma/events/259334777/ This will be an open practice session without a specific agenda to work on any skills that the participants would like to practice. We can get a group consensus on the skills that we would like to practice. Topics can include any item from the ACA Core and Aspirant Skills checklists such as passing a knot, rigging and anchors, rappelling, self-rescue, knots or other topics that the group chooses. The Checklists can be found here: https://www.canyoneering.net/resources/ So bring your rope/gear and lets work on our skills. This is not a practice session for people who have not rappelled before. This is a free event, open to all ACA-Canyoneering SoCal Facebook group Members. Things to Note: • We will be practicing at height! Skills will be practiced with weighted ropes. • We will be outside; dress appropriately for anticipated weather - closed toe shoes, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, windbreaker/jacket, and whatever else you may need to stay comfortable for the day. • Bring snacks, water (It will be hot), etc. Bring a portable chair/cushion to sit on. ACA Anchors Workshop-SLC

This is a FREE workshop, open to all ACA Canyoneering Meetup group and Facebook members. Participation in this workshop is continually at the discretion of the instructor(s). It is up to each participant to fairly and accurately assess their existing skills to determine whether the material to be learned and practiced is appropriate for their abilities. OBJECTIVE: Provide students with the basic personal anchoring skills needed to descend easy canyons as team members with competent leaders and mentors. If you are seeking more complete training, please consider participating in a course offered by an ACA certified instructor/guide (http://www.canyoneering.net/hire-a-guide/). Anchor skills introduced will include: • General Safety • Principles of Anchor Location (D.E.A.R) • Principles of Anchor Construction (E.A.R.N.E.S.T) • Single-point Natural Anchors • Multi-point Natural Anchors • Multi-point Bolt Anchors • Dead Man Anchors • Applying sequencing and friction to utilize otherwise marginal anchors. • Static/Dynamic Courtesy Rappel Starts Required items to bring to class: • Harness • Climbing Helmet • Rappel Device (Totem, ATS, Pirana, CRITR2, SQWUREL) or similar device preferred. No ATCs or similar tube-type device or Figure 8s. • 3-4 Locking Screw-Gate Carabiners (HMS, pear-shape preferred) • 2-20 feet Tubular Webbing • 10 feet 6mm or 7mm Cord for Knot Practice • 1-Quick link • Rope/Rope protection if you can bring it. • Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about purchasing equipment Things to note: • We will be outside, so dress appropriately for anticipated weather (closed toe shoes, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, windbreaker/jacket, and whatever else you may need to stay comfortable). • Bring snacks, water, etc. Bring a portable chair/cushion to sit on. We will provide beta, suggestions, GPS tracks and help you with appropriate canyon selections. We will have sign-up sheets at night to help you organize canyon trips. Please note we do not however put the canyon trips together. This is all up to the participants to organize and execute. We cannot guarantee you a place on any canyon trip. Folks leading canyons are NOT guides and are not paid. They are just helping with logistics. Who goes on the trip is solely up to them. You MUST be an active participant in the canyon and be completely self-sufficient. You must have all your own gear. Most canyons require a wetsuit.
