Hike day 1

The Black Mountain (Y Mynydd Du in Welsh), in the Western Brecon Beacons, is often called the last wilderness in the Brecon Beacons and hiking along it as South Britain’s best ridge hike. This hike traverses a number of high peaks along a domino of steep dramatic escarpments and highlights some of the most striking upland scenery in the UK. The hike involves remote and rugged terrain, with a couple of glacial lakes and excellent mountain views and follows almost completely through open country.

From the Valley we will rise onto the first ridge, and follow its edge with some far views to the two most famous peaks in the Central Beacons, Pen y Fan and Corn Du. We climb Fan Brycheiniog and Fan Foel. The views of the moorland and open country to the north are astounding, and reveal the isolation of the range. We then go on to conquer a even more breathtaking ridge.

Walking along the bottom of the steep escarpments, past some glacial lakes and moraines, shows us a different and intriguing perspective of the high buttresses and steeply sculpted valleys below.

Hike day 2

Starting in a idyllic location, we follow the banks of the river and rapids, with excellent views across the valley we climb the Cribarth mountain, to a mountain edge above the river rapids below.

We then leave the ridge to walk up a fabulous wooded ravine where small waterfalls along its course, can be observed up close. This is ancient woodland where the trees have never been felled. The wooded gorge is a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), because of its humid habitat, supporting a large variety of damp-loving species. We ascend through the beautiful gorge to a natural amphitheatre, carved out over thousands of years by the Sgwd Henrhyd (Henrhyd Waterfall), the highest waterfall in South Wales, which forms a water curtain you can walk behind.
