Data Privacy and COVID-19

Details

‘Trade-offs’ are often discussed in Digital Ethics conversations to determine occasions where we may sacrifice interests along one ethical dimension to receive a benefit along another that we determine sufficiently significant to be worth the risk.
This conversation has come to the fore with the COVID-19 pandemic. Governments around the world exploring the possibility of contact tracing applications, potentially using Bluetooth or geolocation data from smartphones to track citizens and inform them of potential contact with the virus. In unprecedented times, it may seem that unprecedented measures are justified. But are they?

########

In this session, we will be joined by Ivana Bartoletti, a leader in data privacy, to discuss how COVID-19 and contact tracing methods may threaten our privacy.

########

Ivana’s upcoming book ‘An Artificial Revolution: On Power, Politics and AI’ the legal scrutiny, international oversight and public debate required to ensure AI has a positive impact on our society, as without it we are heading towards a future of algorithmic inequality, where technology amplifies regressive biases in our daily lives.

Ivana’s book is releasing in digital form on the 20th of May and physically on the 3rd of September.

I'm currently battling against online hosting platforms, trying to find one we can use for this event. I'll post a URL as soon as I have the (many) technical issues ironed out!

#########

In light of the pandemic this event will of course be hosted online. As a community, we will try to ensure all our future events are joinable online, even after social distancing restrictions are lifted, to make our events as accessible as possible and allow you to make your own decisions about personal safety.
