Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)

Please join us to hear Alan Lattimer, Chief Data Scientist from Socially Determined present on the hot topic of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).
In the world of social determinants of health (SDOH), there tends to be two research paths. One path drills into very specific local measures and outcomes, making it difficult to extend the results to broader populations. The other path looks at large generalizations, and therefore it becomes difficult to develop meaningful correlations to health outcomes.
Socially Determined seeks to understand actionable measures across broad populations, by defining extensible measures of risk down to a 200 m radius across the entire country. Additionally, they have created measures of social risk that they can create for individuals in a population.
In this talk, Alan will focus on how those measures can help improve outcomes for a typical Medicare Advantage population. By clustering on risk patterns and then applying machine learning, they are able to predict those individuals most likely to fall short of desired preventative care goals. In this way, an organization can direct its limited resources towards those most in need of help.
Alan Lattimer runs the data science team and leads analytic strategy for Socially Determined, a company focused on social determinants of health and their impact on disease outcomes and healthcare utilization patterns. His background is in computational mathematics, and he is passionate about using his skills to make a positive impact on vulnerable populations. Dr. Lattimer has a BS in Computer Science and an MS and Ph.D. in Mathematics, all from Virginia Tech.
