WALK: SECRET DIARIES AND PUBLIC SPACES – THE LEGACY OF PEPYS AND WREN-Free!-FULL

NB: Aldgate will be shut, however it is very near Aldgate East (District Line) and Liverpool Street (Central Line and National Rail).

Starting on the very fringes of the City of London, this walk is perfect for lovers of the written word and fabulous buildings. Samuel Pepys and Sir Christopher Wren were living and working in London at the same time. Perhaps surprisingly, they are only known to have met once.

At Aldgate we wander down the line on the old Roman Wall to Tower Hill and the impressive building of Trinity House. Pepys served as a member and master here (the Princess Royal is the current Master). Here is a good point to learn of how Pepys started life and his survival from a life threatening operation. Moving to the ancient St Olaves, once described by Pepys as ‘our very own church’, hear of a sometimes stormy relationship with his wife Elizabeth. Learn of the arguments about his pet dog Fancy.

We then travel to one of the delightful hidden niches in the City; St Dunstan’s Church. Built by Christopher Wren, bombed in WW2 and never rebuilt. This spot is ideal to hear a little about Wren and his immense interests. Learn about how although living to over 90 years old he was only married for 10 years and to two different women. Across London Bridge meandering through the lanes and spotting old churches, Pepys’ words and evidence of the rebuilding of London post 1666. Up to a church that Wren built and remains almost unchanged (apart from WW2 bombing) to this day.

Through Cheapside, an area Pepys describes on several occasions. Learn how his wife was a victim of street crime here. We finish this walk on top of the very recent New Change building. Six floors up we are treated to a stunning view of London and Wren’s most magnificent building, St. Paul’s Cathedral.

A walk that would suit those with an interest in history and humour.
