Augmented Journalism & Publishing

Details

Hello ARLA'ers! This month our meetup's theme is Augmented Journalism & Publishing – an eminently practical application of AR that allows magazines and news outlets to not just expand the real estate of the page, but also tell stories in creative new ways.

Guest Speakers:

John Pavlik, Associate Dean for Research at Northwestern University in Qatar, and author of The Emergence of Augmented Reality As A Storytelling Medium in Journalism (http://jmo.sagepub.com/content/15/1/4.abstract). Pavlik served as director of the journalism school at Rutgers where he is a professor of journalism and head of the Journalism Resources Institute. He was previously at Columbia where he led digital media operations in journalism and served as director of the School of Communication at San Diego State University. He is author of leading books on digital journalism and new media.

Alan Craig, Senior Associate Director of the Institute for Computing in Humanities, Arts, and Social Science. Craig's career as a Research Scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications spans over 25 years. He has co-authored a book on virtual reality with William R. Sherman and Jeffrey D. Will which is now available. The book - Developing Virtual Reality Applications - details several virtual reality applications and how they are used in a variety of fields. The authors examine what makes the applications workable and how principles and theories of virtual reality are applied. His upcoming book Understanding Augmented Reality will be available this year.

Alan will share his experience and lessons learned augmenting the final 2012 issue of NCSA scientific publication ACCESS Magazine.

Refreshments will be served. :)
