ARTEMIS is a social/activity group for adult women of any age (18 and older*) living in the New York City area (or greater metro area) who have either been formally or self-diagnosed with some form of autism -- whether aspergers, autism or related diagnoses. The group is organized by a woman with self-diagnosed aspergers in her early 30s (not a mental health professional) and is not affiliated with any organizations.
THIS IS NOT A GROUP FOR PARENTS OF AUTISTIC CHILDREN unless of course they themselves are on the spectrum.
Connect with other women with similar backgrounds and communication styles through get-togethers, creative expression workshops, visits to museums and other cool places around the city, and whatever other activities that the group would be interested in doing -- I would love to have people suggest things they'd like to do in the future and help to plan events or happenings if they are interested in doing so.
ARTEMIS aims to be a non-judgemental, drama-free zone where women can feel safe just being themselves and relax with other ladies who "get it" with the eventual goal of building a small group of friends. I will aim to plan a meet-up once a month and the meetups will be mostly in manhattan and occasionally in one of the boroughs if we decide to go somewhere there.
This group is an LGBTQ safe space, meaning, among other things, trans women and genderqueer individuals who identify with the female experience are entirely welcome. If this makes you uncomfortable, please do not join.
Please read the group ground rules before joining by clicking on "Pages" and looking at the "Group Ground Rules" page before joining the group.
**This Just In: I've started a Secret Facebook group for ARTEMIS (a private group that won't show up in a search, only members can see who's in it, and has no direct link), so that we can get to know each other a bit more and have another platform for sharing resources and ideas for future meetups! If you would like to join that group, please join this group first and then send me a message asking to join the Facebook group and I will make it happen.**
Read and learn more about autism in women by clicking on "Pages" and looking at the Resources page.
*if you are younger than 18, you can also join the group but please message me first.
