What we're about

Are you good without a god? Hey, so are we!

We all benefit from a supportive community for friends, charity, and fostering a better understanding of secular values with our neighbors. Atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, humanists, skeptics, non-religious, lost tourists, and the generally confused are all welcome to join us!

It is often claimed that atheists are rare when in fact nearly 20% of our nation's population do not believe in a higher power. Still, atheists can feel isolated because the religious community is so organized and outspoken on issues. Building and participating in a community is the first step toward being heard.

Plus - the conversation is great!

The Arkansas Society of Freethinkers is an organization of secular individuals whose goals are to:

Build a supportive and active community.

Promote public acceptance of nonbelievers.

Defend science education and the separation of church and state.

We encourage everyone to suggest events and activities. In addition to various volunteer, social, and public events, our regular events are:

Monthly Lecture Series

1st Tuesday dinner and drinks

New member welcome potluck

Book Club

Damgoode Pies Pint Night

The "Freespeakers" Toastmasters chapter

Human Light mid-winter celebration

Winter Solstice holiday display at the Arkansas State Capitol

Public Events that we regularly support and attend

Science Cafe

Socrates Cafe

We are a volunteer organization and most of our events are free for the public to attend. If you want to support the Arkansas Society of Freethinkers and help us keep sponsoring these activities and events, membership is $30 a year. Our membership year is Jan 1st - Dec 31st.

New members and new ideas are always welcome.

New Member Social- Potluck

From NIKKI: Hello everyone! I am hosting the potluck this month and wanted to give everyone some details of the fun to be had! I have a pool and all are welcome to bring their suits and go for a swim. I will have cornhole set up outside and Wii Sports set up inside for anyone who would like to get a tournament going. I have a propane grill and will have veggie and shrimp kabobs available to cook if anyone knows how to operate it (I don’t). I hope you can make it out for what is sure to be an evening of fun, friends, and food! By popular request we now have a potluck on the north side of Central Arkansas. There is a pool and we always have some great food! Bring something to share and your favorite bottle. If you have not yet been to an event, this is a great place to start!

Strategic Plan Development

300 Plainview Cir

ASF needs a strategic plan so that we can prioritize deployment of our resources, define objectives that will help us better achieve our mission, set a timeframe to accomplish the tasks to get there, and rally our members to support our progress. In this series of 4 meetups, our objective is to create a detailed outline of a strategic plan to get ASF from where we are today to where we want to be in the future. We will discuss everything from the collective action problem in economics to budgets. If you are a veteran nonprofit organizer, someone with grant or executive experience, or someone who can contribute to our understanding, feel free to join the conversation. HOMEWORK: Scour the internet for examples of secular organizations that have either failed or succeeded, and the strategies they applied to reach this outcome.

Freespeakers Toastmasters

Location visible to members

A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their communication and leadership abilities in a no-pressure atmosphere. There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate each other’s presentations. We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth. Join us every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month in the 1st Floor Fribourgh Room at the Main Library to see what happens at a Toastmasters meeting! Visit our Freespeakers Toastmasters Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/FreespeakersToastmasters/) for more details. Afterwards, join us at Damgoode Pies (http://www.damgoodepies.com/), right next door in the River Market, where we'll continue the fun and friendly conversation.
