What we're about

Welcome! This meetup dedicated to all professionals involved in Cyber Security for Automated Processes and Control Systems including security for Operating Technology (OT), Industrial Control Systems (ICS), SCADA Systems, Transportation Systems, Building Control Systems (BCS), and even emerging Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems. Our purpose is to connect the professionals in the Greater Aberdeen area with real interest in or responsibility for the cyber security of these systems.

Once we have enough critical mass of interest in Aberdeen, we will gather for purposes of education, information exchange, and discovery of new opportunities and, yes, perhaps a few happy hours! If you are interested in serving on a committee to help shape this meetup experience, please contact the organizers directly.

Please join us for a -very- exciting look into what's happening in attacks on ICS/OT worldwide!

A sneak preview of a new report - the latest updated Top 20 Cyber Attacks on Industrial Control Systems. The attack "ruler" now includes nation-state-grade ransomware, IT-targeted ransomware that triggers "abundance of caution" OT / ICS shutdowns, and IT-targeted ransomware that triggers OT shutdowns when IT systems vital to OT networks are impaired. Cloud-seeded ransomware / supply-chain attacks are highlighted as the new biggest risk. We work an example - using the updated attack set to evaluate classic and modern security postures at a large refinery. Join us to understand how cyber attacks are impacting critical operations around the world today.

Abstract:
Over the past thirty years industrial cybersecurity has evolved to the point that patterns have emerged. Repeating waves have passed through the industry, air gaps, threat intelligence, OT monitoring, and now supply chain have each asked us to look at cybersecurity from different perspectives. Today operators should be coming to see that the practice of industrial cybersecurity consists of various types of situational awareness used in combination to support operational goals. Those charged with defending critical systems will increasingly succeed more for the artfulness with which tools and techniques are deployed.
Speaker:
Chris Blask "In the early 1990s while trying to make it easier to get online I accidentally invented a firewall. When it turned out most folks couldn't use it without Network Address Translation I fell into a mop closet and invented that with some colleagues, by carefully arranged random chance. More recently, while ranting about supply chain security in 2019 I tripped over a pile of digital chain, unintentionally placed there earlier for just that purpose, and found myself inventing Attestation Channels (Digital Bill of Materials) with a co-worker.

Pondering where we are and how the specific heck we got here remains the foundation of my Focused Brownian Motion approach to identifying the Inevitability Curves ahead. Surfing those curves for fun and profit remains the foundation of my daily activity."
