What we're about

Aberdeen Young Walkers is part of Ramblers Scotland, a charity which aims to promote walking through out Scotland.

Update 15/9/20: We are able to take out groups of up to 30 people from any number of housholds under the sports and leisure exemption to the 'rule of six'. This is because we are a Ramblers Scotland group, and are operating under guidance from them and Sport Scotland. There may be some significant changes to the way walks are run under this guidance.

We have a great group of organisers who not only organise hillwalking meets but a wide variety of social events too! So if you are looking to have fun, get fit, and meet a welcoming bunch of people, then this is the ideal group for you!

Membership

This is a Ramblers group and as such we ask people who wish to walk with the group regularly to join as a member. Membership costs around £34 a year and there are lots of great benefits (in addition to being able to come on our walks!) including discounts to our annual Glencoe weekend, a magazine 4 times a year, organised skills training, and a discount at Cotswolds! New people to the group can come along up to three times before deciding if they want to join. Please let us know if you are already a Ramblers member.

You can join online by visiting Ramblers Scotland page @ https://www.ramblers.org.uk/become-a-member/join-us.aspx

Please ensure you select ABERDEEN YOUNG WALKERS as your group. We are not the group called 'Aberdeen'.

Safety

Please note: All members should take responsibility for their own well being and safety while on the walks.

All members attending any hill walks should have a good pair of walking boots, waterproofs, rucksack and warm layers as a minimum unless otherwise stated by the walk organiser. The weather in Scotland is highly unpredictable and you should come prepared for all weather conditions even if it is sunny at the start of the day! Please do not come dressed in Jeans, trainers or other inappropriate clothing as you may not be allowed on the walk especially if it is a potential risk to the group. We have also put together kit lists for low level and high level walks, which can be found here (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5L9DrvZwl4VbDdYeGZiZGtYeGc). If you are unsure about what is appropriate kit, please contact one of the walk leaders - we are all more than happy to help

No shows/wait list

We have a large number of members signed up to the waiting list for each event - as a result we would request that you think in advance about whether you can attend a walk, and change your RSVP as soon as possible - preferably several days before - if you cannot.

Photographs

Photographs which are published on Meetup may be used on Social Media sites and for Marketing purposes so if you are uncomfortable with this, please ensure you get in touch with one of the organisers.

We hope to see you on an event soon!

Owain Bristow Memorial - Saturday 14th August 2021

Online event

Some of you will remember Owain Bristow, an inspirational walk leader for Aberdeen Young Walkers and all round decent human being. His family have been in touch and asked us to pass on the following information with regards to his memorial:

We're holding the memorial on Saturday 14th August, starting 2pm, at Wooler Youth Hostel, 30 Cheviot Street, Wooler, Northumberland, NE71 6LW. Followed by tea and cake, so it'll finish about 4-5pm.

It'll be informal and secular, with various friends and family speaking, anyone who wants to. If you'd like to say a few words then just let me know so I can draw up an order of service.

We have the hostel for the whole weekend, so there's free accommodation and food on Friday and Saturday nights for anyone who wants it. If you'd like to stay, let me know which night(s) and any dietary requirements.

There's a small car park at the hostel, and more free parking down the road in Wooler town. The nearest railway station is Berwick-upon-Tweed, and we can arrange lifts for anyone who needs them. The place doesn't have any particular connection to Owain, it's just a nice-looking available space that's equally (in)convenient for everyone to get to! It's right next to the Cheviot Hills, as the name suggests, so if anyone is thinking of planning a walk on the Sunday there are some good options.

I'll post it on Owain's Facebook in the next couple of days, but please do spread the word to anyone you know who might want to come.

I'm also hoping to have it videoed, maybe live streamed, for those who can't attend.

Hope to see you then and all the best,

Clare

If you would like to attend, please contact the family directly if you have their contact details. Alternatively, I'm happy to relay any messages and pass on your contact details.
