What we're about

Aberdeen Young Walkers is part of Ramblers Scotland, a charity which aims to promote walking through out Scotland.

Update 15/9/20: We are able to take out groups of up to 30 people from any number of housholds under the sports and leisure exemption to the 'rule of six'. This is because we are a Ramblers Scotland group, and are operating under guidance from them and Sport Scotland. There may be some significant changes to the way walks are run under this guidance.

We have a great group of organisers who not only organise hillwalking meets but a wide variety of social events too! So if you are looking to have fun, get fit, and meet a welcoming bunch of people, then this is the ideal group for you!

Membership

This is a Ramblers group and as such we ask people who wish to walk with the group regularly to join as a member. Membership costs around £34 a year and there are lots of great benefits (in addition to being able to come on our walks!) including discounts to our annual Glencoe weekend, a magazine 4 times a year, organised skills training, and a discount at Cotswolds! New people to the group can come along up to three times before deciding if they want to join. Please let us know if you are already a Ramblers member.

You can join online by visiting Ramblers Scotland page @ https://www.ramblers.org.uk/become-a-member/join-us.aspx

Please ensure you select ABERDEEN YOUNG WALKERS as your group. We are not the group called 'Aberdeen'.

Safety

Please note: All members should take responsibility for their own well being and safety while on the walks.

All members attending any hill walks should have a good pair of walking boots, waterproofs, rucksack and warm layers as a minimum unless otherwise stated by the walk organiser. The weather in Scotland is highly unpredictable and you should come prepared for all weather conditions even if it is sunny at the start of the day! Please do not come dressed in Jeans, trainers or other inappropriate clothing as you may not be allowed on the walk especially if it is a potential risk to the group. We have also put together kit lists for low level and high level walks, which can be found here (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5L9DrvZwl4VbDdYeGZiZGtYeGc). If you are unsure about what is appropriate kit, please contact one of the walk leaders - we are all more than happy to help

No shows/wait list

We have a large number of members signed up to the waiting list for each event - as a result we would request that you think in advance about whether you can attend a walk, and change your RSVP as soon as possible - preferably several days before - if you cannot.

Photographs

Photographs which are published on Meetup may be used on Social Media sites and for Marketing purposes so if you are uncomfortable with this, please ensure you get in touch with one of the organisers.

We hope to see you on an event soon!

Scolty Hill Walk

Needs a location

Hi all!
Get ready for another exciting walk which will take us outside Aberdeen this time we will be going to Scolty hill in Banchory. A nice wee trek through a forest as you can imagine going uphill. Its not a massive hill the elevation will get to 151m at most. It will be one of the shorter walks we had so far only 4km which should take us about an hour and a half. If the weather is nice we will stay and chill at the top of the hill taking in the sights. Please allocate about 2 hours of your time for this walk (does not include travel time to Banchory.)

Scolty Hill does have a convenient car located at the bottom of the hill so you should be alright for parking. We will meet at the car park at 11 am. I will personally be taking the bus to Banchory number 201 leaves the bus station at 9:15am so if you don’t have your own mode of transport feel free to join me on the bus ride!

In terms of kit make sure to bring a warm jacket as the weather is getting colder and it also may rain on the day so if its waterproof that is a good bonus. The terrain is not difficult so good walking shoes are fine we are not scaling a mountain here. Make sure to have some snacks and liquids to hydrate yourself with.

UPDATE:
The car park at Scolty hill is payed you will need need to bring £1.50 to park for 3 hours. We will meet at the car park at 11am.

The bus 201 leaves union square bus station at 9:15am the ticket cost is £11.40 for both ways. We will be stopping near Morrisons in Banchory and the walk to Scolty Hill will take us about 20 minutes. If you do decide to come by bus let me know so I can keep an eye out for you at the bus station. Best way to reach me is just to send me a message on meetup :)

Lastly the walk is pretty straight forward the altitude grows very gradually and the paths are pretty well laid out. However there is a part of the walk that I call "The Fun Zone". The Fun Zone lasts for about only about 15 minutes its a steep rocky path with very fast altitude gain and can be very cardio intensive. Going through it might give you a nice indication of your fitness level and if you would be fit enough to go on bigger hikes. I think most people would be fit enough to complete it ( we can stop and rest if somebody finds it particularly challenging I am not that evil...maybe). However I would not recommend this walk for people who may have issues with their knees as they might struggle up this steep part of the hill.

We will continue to register attendance using the Ramblers App. If you are a Ramblers member, it would be really helpful if you could either bring your membership card along, or download and login to the Ramblers app. If you are not a Ramblers member, I will ask for your name and contact number/e-mail at the start. ***If this is your fourth or more walk with AYW then you need to have Ramblers membership: http://www.ramblers.org.uk/become-a-member.aspx

Any questions please feel free to get in touch with me.
Looking Forward to seeing you there!

Culardoch and Creag an Dail Bheag, Keiloch / 23.8kms / 853m ascent

Needs a location

Distance 23.8 kms
Time 8 – 9 hrs
Ascent 853 m

These two rounded Corbetts on the fringes of the Cairngorms are conveniently climbed together. Culardoch offers extensive views into Aberdeenshire whereas Càrn Liath is a belvedere for admiring the granite tors of nearby giants Ben Avon and Beinn a'Bhuird.

This is a grade 4 walk i.e. a harder hill walk with some pathless sections and boggy ground in places, and will be a long day, therefore please ensure you are fit enough to participate and have prior experience on the hills. It is also vital to bring appropriate equipment and clothing suited to the conditions. Please refer to the link at the bottom of the description and feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

The meeting point is at the Keiloch car park, as described in the Walkhighlands link above. We will depart from the car park at 8:30am, therefore please aim to arrive 10-15 minutes earlier to get kit ready, etc.

Note: There is a charge for parking (around £3).

I have space to take 3 others, for pickup in the West End of Aberdeen. If you would like a lift (sharing fuel costs), please comment below.

We will continue to register attendance using the Ramblers App. If you are a Ramblers member, it would be helpful if you could either bring your membership card along, or download and login to the Ramblers app. If you are not a Ramblers member, I will ask for your name and contact number/e-mail at the start, for submission of the register to the Ramblers.
