What we're about

The Academy of European Medieval Martial Arts or AEMMA (pronounced "ehma"), is a historical European martial arts school focused on the research, reconstruction and resurrection of authentic medieval martial arts of all fighting styles (armed, unarmed, armoured and unarmoured), firmly based on the works of the late 14th century Friulian swordmaster by the name of Fiore dei Liberi, demonstrating the deadly practicality and effectiveness of the art as it applies to today's personal self-defense.

AEMMA was initially created in May of 1998 in Toronto, Canada and under the laws of Ontario's Corporations Act and the Regulations of the Ministry of the Attorney General, was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation (NPO Corporation Number: 1468524) in May 28, 2001. It has as its mission:

"The mission of AEMMA is to resurrect the combat skills, philosophies and principles of an accomplished European Medieval martial artist and to achieve a state which would be consistent with that of a medieval warrior in both technology and ideal."

Apart from its founding Toronto chapter, AEMMA also has 3 vibrant chapters in Guelph and Stratford Ontario, and Digby Nova Scotia.

Our Fighting Arts Collective Inclusivity Policy:

Our community has and will continue to develop as a place where people of all descriptions come to pursue the goals of their chosen forms of training.

When people we don't recognize arrive in the gym, we welcome them. A friendly hello and introductions to the group leaders they seek is something any guest can expect form any member of this community.

This community respects the individual. We appreciate each other, and especially the hard work and positive attitudes that each of us brings to the space and our work. This community fosters both self-discovery and exploration within the arts that we study. Getting to know each of the groups and the nature of their work supports the general atmosphere of community appreciation we enjoy here.

It is understood that our environment represents the state of our progress and as such we strive to keep it clean and safe, ready for further training. Each of our member stakes it upon themselves to keep the space uncluttered and clean for their own use and the use of those latter in the day and week.

The Fighting Arts Collective maintains a positive, light, and informal energy. That said, we remain disciplined and focused on what is important. We are professionals in our arts, and in our training.

When we show respect, it is simple and clear because it comes from a core desire to maintain the energy that we have come to know and love about this place.
