Sustainable Schoolyards Workshop: Planting and Tending Native Schoolyard Gardens

"Sustainable schoolyard projects are projects that are sustainable - they provide value to the school community and receive support in the form of ongoing use, engagement, and care”. Planting a native schoolyard garden is just the beginning! Get ready for spring plantings and garden care, and learn how to plan, implement, and support native wildlife habitats on school grounds.
Using Woodson High School campus as a working example, Kris Unger, Primary Conservator, Friends of Accotink Creek (http://accotink.org), and Matt Bright, Conservation Manager, Earth Sangha (http://earthsangha.org), will provide a general overview of creating and maintaining native schoolyard gardens. We will start with a presentation and discussion inside, then go outside to explore the schoolyard. Participants are encouraged to bring pictures and a brief summary of their current/planned projects, for discussion.
This workshop is part of a watershed engagement program sponsored by The Friends of Accotink Creek (http://accotink.org) in partnership with Earth Sangha (http://earthsangha.org) and funded by a grant from Fairfax Water (https://www.fcwa.org/). FCPS Get2Green (http://get2green.fcps.edu/) is promoting this to FCPS teachers, but we're also welcoming community members who are interested in learning about and supporting schoolyard gardens.
